House Reportedly Will Sign with Jaguars
Tuesday, March 10
"Jaguars set to add another big-time FA: Ascending former Packers CB Davon House is set join them at $6.25M per year," reported Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
"House will be signing a four-year, $25 million contract offer with Jacksonville. House will receive $10 million guaranteed," added Fox Sports' Paul Imig. "The Green Bay Packers got involved late in the process and were only willing to offer four years, $17 million with $5 million guaranteed. House also received offers from the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders," noted Imig.
Yesterday, Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin noted the Packers, Jets, Jags, Seahawks, Bears and Cowboys as potential destinations for House.
On March 6, Imig reported House preferred to return to Green Bay, but he had yet to hear from the Packers:
"Despite Davon House's preference to re-sign with the Green Bay Packers, the team has not reached out at all to their free-agent cornerback, a source close to the situation told FOXSportsWisconsin.com.
The source added that House has "heard nothing from Green Bay" and is "very surprised" by it.
"
"I think he's going to hit the market," said House's agent, Kenny Zuckerman, per ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky following Imig's report. "There will be a lot of interest."
The Packers entered free agency with difficult decisions to make. The team clearly prioritized wide receiver Randall Cobb, re-signing him to a four-year contract worth $40 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Green Bay also has to make a decision on offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga, who is also receiving heavy interest around the league, per Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel.
ESPN.com's Mike Sando even ranked House as his top free-agent bargain:
"House has spent his entire four-year career with Green Bay and is still only 25 years old (he turns 26 in July). He has good size for the position and seems to have good ability, but injuries suffered in 2012 and last season set back his efforts to win additional playing time. Was it a case of bad luck, or does House lack durability? If he stays healthy, he could become a very good player at a decent price. Then again, there might not be many true bargains at corner if reports are true about Byron Maxwell getting $10 million a season.
"
House desired a bigger role in the NFL, as he noted on Jan. 19, per Imig: "I know I can start in this league. It's what I want to do is start. It sucks, like Seahawks in overtime, and I'm not on defense, and it hurts. We lose the game and it's like, I feel like I could've done something, but I'm on the sideline, playing special teams."
It's difficult to teach that drive and determination and House appears to be worth the gamble. House, 25, is entering the prime of his career. In 40 career games played since 2011, he has accumulated 102 total tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and two interceptions.
