Turner On The Hot Seat?

Justin HrubyAug 19, 2009

Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner is entering his sixth season and this year is completely different than the others.  Turner has got himself a quarterback that has great presence in the pocket, a cannon for an arm, and great accuracy for throwing the deep ball in Jay Cutler.  Not only that, he's got a running back coming off a stellar rookie season rushing for almost 1200 yards, a tight-end that is expected to be a possible Pro-Bowler, and an under estimated recieving core that could take this league by storm.

So all is well right?   I wouldn't be too sure just yet.

Let's face it Ron Turner does have the ability to put some great game plans together, and some that make you wonder.  I mean who can forget that play call against the Panthers in Week 2 at Carolina, the Bears were driving down by 3 just before the two minute warning. Forte ran for nine yards on 1st down, the back-to-back incomplete passes from Kyle Orton left the Bears 4th and one at midfield.  I know what your thinking give it to Forte right?  Wrong...He called JASON MCKIE up the middle and into the heart of a good Carolina Panthers front defensive line and was just completely stuffed for a minimal loss, turning the ball over, and eventually costing the Bears a victory that would have given the Bears a 2-0 record after an impressive upset against the Colts in Indy. A win that could of put the Bears in the playoffs over Philly.

Speaking of the Colts...I'm sure no can forget the Superbowl matchup in Miami, the Bears had a 14-7 lead when Devin Hester took the opening kickoff back to a TD and a couple of possessions later the Bears put and impressive series together lead by Thomas Jones that led to a touchdown pass from Rex Grossman to Muhsin Muhammad.  That was it, after that the Bears played conservative leading to several three and outs, costly turnovers let Colts get back into the game.

Time was running out and the play calling got desparate and Grossman was forced to be bad Rex eventually leading the Colts to victory.  The sad thing is that most Bears fan were blaming Grossman when they should of been looking at the man calling the plays.  Now i know that there are plenty more examples of Ron Turner's horrific play callings but those two are the two that should stick out most for this Bear's fan.

What will we make of this Bear's season if Jay Cutler doesn't dazzle Bear's Nation and lead Chicago just to the playoffs?  Will we try to blame the quaterback and try to pull another Rex Grossman on Cutler and run him out of town?  Or will this be the one and only chance that Ron Turner will get with Jay Cutler.  I do believe if Turner can not utilize the weapons that he has, then I think its time for a change at Offensive Coordinators position.

I have no doubt that Cutler can handle himself in the huddle and in the presence of defensive opponents trying to bury him into the ground.  I am fearful that our offensive coordinator does have the capability to call plays that have nothing to do with the strength of the Bears offense.  We've seen it many time before, don't think for a minute that we wont see at lease a couple times this years that could cost the Bears a game or two this season.  One or two game that the Bears can not afford to lose due to the fact the the NFC North is so close between Chicago, Green Bay, and Minnesota
