Parker Reportedly Re-Signs with Chiefs

Saturday, March 14

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Parker will return to the Chiefs after signing a five-year, $30 million contract.

Parker Drew Interest from Slew of Teams Before Signing

Wednesday, March 11

Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reported that Parker visited Chicago.

Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports noted that as many as seven teams were interested in signing Parker:

Parker, 27, spent the last two seasons with the Chiefs. The Newberry College product worked his way into the starting lineup in 2014, making 94 tackles and an interception after taking over for star Eric Berry at strong safety. He had previously been cut five times since 2011.

“I’m just so glad and blessed the Chiefs’ organization gave me a chance to come in here and be me,” Parker said, per Paylor. “With them giving me the chances to go out there and play multiple positions, it just made me feel more confident within the defense.”

Of course, opportunity does not always translate to wild success. Parker was ranked 53rd among 54 qualifying safeties in Pro Football Focus' run-stop percentage metric and was just as bad in coverage. PFF also ranked him near the bottom of players as a tackler. His numbers were not much more promising as a cornerback, either.

Parker drew a lot of interest from around the league, and while some may believe the Chiefs overpaid for his services, his return helps provide consistency to a secondary that needs it heading into next season.
