Sri Lanka vs. Scotland: Date, Live Stream, TV Info, Cricket World Cup Preview

Rory MarsdenMar 9, 2015

Sri Lanka will be looking to claim their fourth Pool A victory at the 2015 World Cup to advance through to the knockout rounds when they face Scotland in Hobart on Wednesday.

The Scots have failed to win a match so far at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, and they are unlikely to trouble a very strong Sri Lanka side.

The Sri Lankans' defeat to Australia on Sunday means a second-placed group finish is unlikely but a strong showing against Scotland would give them great momentum going into the quarter-finals.

Despite their defeat to Australia, Sri Lanka still scored over 300 for a third consecutive match in Sydney, and their batting prominence should see them to victory against Scotland.

While the Saltires got their own big total—318—in defeat to Bangladesh in their previous fixture, they simply do not have the personnel to compete with Sri Lanka in Hobart.

In-form Kumar Sangakkara scored a third tournament century against the Aussies, a record per Cricket World Cup, and he is unlikely to be hugely troubled by Scotland's bowlers:

Similarly, tournament ton-makers Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne will fancy their chances of scoring big at Hobart—the venue for Ireland and Zimbabwe's high-scoring thriller on Saturday.

If Scotland are to have any chance of overcoming Sri Lanka, they will need opener Kyle Coetzer to lead from the front with the bat, the right-hander having scored 156 in defeat to Bangladesh.

Josh Davey will be key with the ball to restrict the Sri Lankan batting power, the 24-year-old having taken 11 wickets so far in the tournament at an average of just under 20.

However, it is difficult to foresee a scenario in which Scotland are not dealt their fifth defeat of the tournament.

The Sri Lankans will be hugely motivated to finish the group phase well ahead of further and bigger challenges in the knockout rounds, and they will not allow for any complacency given the huge experience in the side.

Lasith Malinga will, as ever, be key with the ball for Sri Lanka; the paceman has a perfect opportunity to pick up more tournament wickets and edge back closer to his devastating best.

Malinga has not been in the best form so far at the tournament, but he is hugely motivated and will see an opportunity to take several scalps against Scotland, per cricket writer Andrew Fernando:

Scotland have still never won a World Cup match, and seem unlikely to break that duck in 2015's tournament, with co-hosts Australia to play after their Sri Lanka challenge.

Having already been confirmed as being knocked out following the Bangladesh defeat, the Saltires are now simply playing for pride.

They will look to build on some decent work at the tournament so far and give Sri Lanka a few things to think about, but the subcontinent outfit are heavy favourites for Wednesday's clash and should win with ease.
