Breaking Down How Roman Reigns Can Win Over WWE Fans at WrestleMania 31

Donald WoodMar 9, 2015

Roman Reigns is just under three weeks away from main-eventing WrestleMania 31, and the company’s main goal should be helping him win over the fans before he walks out of the biggest pay-per-view of the year with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

There are a few easy steps over the coming weeks that would help Reigns convince the WWE Universe that he deserves to beat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

The easiest and quickest way to help the fans enjoy what Reigns brings to the table is by having him speak less. He struggles at times with his promo work, and giving him less to say will lift some of the pressure off his inexperienced shoulders.

As former president Teddy Roosevelt said, “Speak softly, and carry a big stick.” Reigns has the look of a tough guy and an aura from his appearance alone.

Instead of letting him ruin that presence by botching his lines, saying just a few words and letting his actions carry a segment is all it takes to get fans excited.

Another area he should continue to improve in over the coming weeks is his in-ring work in longer matches. The WWE should book Reigns in extended bouts with skilled performers on every episode of Raw, SmackDown and Main Event to help him earn his stripes in a hurry.

He will need to be at his best against Lesnar, and plenty of practice will make perfect.

The key to all of this will be the WWE Creative team. While most fans have lost all faith in the writers when it comes to developing entertaining storylines, the booking of Reigns is simple: Book him like former world champion Goldberg.

What made Goldberg so great was the intensity and aura he possessed. From his walk through the backstage area to the pyrotechnics during his entrance to the sheer intensity he showed in the ring, Goldberg always let his actions do the talking.

Reigns already has the intense walk through the crowd that will help him get over with the WWE Universe, but he has to be so much more intense during his promos and in the ring.

He should not be cutting promos like The Rock because he doesn’t have that ability on the mic yet, and he should say almost nothing while devastating everyone with his powerful moves.

The final key to Reigns’ success is the company not forcing him down the throats of the fans. John Cena is one of the biggest stars in the wrestling business, but there is a vocal portion of the fanbase that hates him because he is not what it wants.

Even the snarkiest of wrestling fans can get behind an athlete who lets his actions speak for him, and Reigns would gain the support of the WWE Universe if Vince McMahon and the powers calling the shots let the No. 1 contender grow his fanbase organically.

With only three weeks left until WrestleMania, the creative team better follow these simple tips or risk having the main event of the company’s premier PPV hijacked by unsatisfied wrestling fans.
