John Cena Taking Loss to Rusev at WrestleMania Would Add Depth to His Character

Donald WoodMar 6, 2015

Former world champion John Cena is one of the biggest stars in the history of the wrestling business, and he has the chance to further cement his legacy by taking a clean loss to Rusev at WWE’s WrestleMania 31.

Taking a shocking defeat at the biggest show of the year would certainly add depth to his character.

As a 15-time world champion and the top dog in the WWE for over a decade, there is a perception that Cena buries other wrestlers. While there is no questioning the unnecessary ways in which he has beaten top heels such as Bray Wyatt and Mark Henry over the years, he has the chance to find redemption against Rusev.

Most members of the WWE Universe believe it’s a foregone conclusion that Cena will be the one to break Rusev’s unpinned and unsubmitted streak at WrestleMania. Stepping in the ring with Cena should be enough to give the United States champion a rub, but Cena’s victories in the past have made his challengers appear to be incredibly weak.

Losing to Rusev clean at WrestleMania would be a shocking result that stuns the wrestling community. Hardcore wrestling fans have been clamoring for Cena to add an edge to his character, and after taking the loss to Rusev in the rematch, the former world champion could reach his breaking point.

Even the smarkiest wrestling fans will be forced to acknowledge that Cena did what was truly best for business if he takes the clean pinfall at WrestleMania. If this is an I Quit match, though, Rusev’s chances of winning drop to almost 0 percent.

With Roman Reigns in the main event of the PPV, the company should be trying its best to build new Superstars for the future. The need for top heels is evident, and in the first year on the main roster, Rusev has emerged as a star. Add in a WrestleMania win over Cena, and Rusev will be on the fast track to stardom.

Rusev has proved that he is one of the most talented big men in the ring, and with Lana as his mouthpiece, the entire Russian sympathizer gimmick works.

It’s an old cliche in wrestling, but the performers are selling the gimmick to perfection.

Now is the time for Cena to take the dive to build a star for the future. Rusev’s bright future should help everyone involved see that Cena must start passing the torch to the next generation.
