Cricket World Cup 2015 Tables: Latest Groups After Bangladesh vs Scotland Result

Rory MarsdenMar 5, 2015

Scotland's 2015 World Cup hopes were dashed once and for all on Thursday as their six-wicket loss to Bangladesh in Nelson condemned them to a group-stage exit Down Under.

While the Scots were never actually expected to trouble the knockout rounds in Australia and New Zealand, a first-ever World Cup victory seemed like a legitimate aim ahead of the tournament.

However, with only giants Sri Lanka and Australia left to play in Pool A, that now seems highly unlikely, but Bangladesh are now well-placed to advance to the quarter-finals after Thursday's victory.

Scotland's defeat was made all the more crushing on Thursday by the fact that they were very much in the game until the very end.

Batting first, they posted their best-ever World Cup score of 318-8, Kyle Coetzer's 156 the key contribution.

Coetzer's ton was the first-ever century from Scotland in a World Cup, while his score was a tournament record for an associate player.

He brought up his century with a six over long-on, per Star Sports, just one of a number of fine shots from Coetzer in a measured and intelligent knock:

Bangladesh were eventually set a target of 319 for victory, a fine effort from the Scots, but given past results in Nelson, the Test side certainly still seemed favourites.

And so it proved, as Bangladesh reached the target with 11 balls remaining for the loss of only four wickets.

Tamim Iqbal was the Bangladeshi star with the bat, his 95 coming from 100 balls with nine fours and a six, although he still fell short of the elusive century, per cricket statistician Mazher Arshad:

Mahmudullah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan all chipped in with useful half-century contributions to keep Bangladesh on track for a last-eight spot.

Bangladesh are now effectively fighting it out with England for fourth spot in Pool A, and the pair face off against each other in a crucial clash on Monday in Adelaide.

With England likely to beat Afghanistan in their final group game and Bangladesh unlikely to claim victory against New Zealand in their own closing encounter, the Adelaide Oval clash is something of a winner-takes-all occasion.

Bangladesh will be buoyed by their success against the Scots, and they should be confident of beating an England side who have been poor thus far in the tournament, per sports reporter Martyn Herman:

England have arguably the better all-round quality, with class in the likes of Ian Bell, Moeen Ali, Joe Root and James Anderson, but their performances have been well below par.

Eoin Morgan's side will be under huge pressure in Adelaide given their current pool position, and Bangladesh can take advantage of that and see themselves through to the quarter-finals.

As for Scotland, the inevitable group-stage exit is now confirmed, and they must attempt to hold their own against Sri Lanka and Australia before returning home.
