2015 NFL Free Agency: Rumors and Predictions for Top Players Set to Hit Market

Mike ChiariMar 7, 2015

Some of the biggest names in the NFL will be available to sign wherever they please on March 10, and there is no shortage of buzz regarding the emergence of potential suitors for several of those players.

While many of the impact players who were on track to hit the open market ended up getting slapped with the franchise tag, the impending free-agent class is still stacked with talent. For teams that are either looking to become contenders or cement their status as such, going shopping this offseason would definitely behoove them.

As organizations proverbially back up the Brinks trucks in preparation for the bonanza that is free agency, here is a rundown of the top rumors regarding the hottest commodities on the market.

Ndamukong Suh

Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is one of the true franchise-changing players in the NFL, which is why he figures to generate more interest than anyone else once free agency commences.

The 28-year-old superstar has made the Pro Bowl four times and been named a First-Team All-Pro on three occasions since entering the league in 2010. He is coming off a season in which he registered 8.5 sacks and helped morph the Detroit Lions defense into one of the NFL's best.

While the Lions would obviously love to keep the former Nebraska standout, they declined to franchise him, and they will now have a ton of company when it comes to acquiring his services.

According to Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports, two teams that will be very much in the hunt for Suh are the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts. Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 in Washington adds that the deep-pocketed Washington Redskins figure to be a factor as well:

Suh will have his pick of the litter, and there is no doubt that he will leave this process a very rich man regardless of where he ultimately signs. While it doesn't come as much of a surprise, his Lions teammates are very hopeful that he resists the urge to leave the Motor City.

Per Rod Beard of The Detroit News, Lions safety James Ihedigbo fully realizes how vital Suh is to the team's success.

"I want him back. He's such a key part to everything we do that we hope that we can get him back," Ihedigbo said Monday. "It's the nature of the business, so it's really out of my hands and what I think really doesn't matter."

The possibility of Suh departing Detroit is very real, though, and there are rumblings that his exit could be inevitable. Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that some are resigned to Suh inking a deal with the Dolphins:

Suh would give the Dolphins perhaps the best defensive line in the NFL, but it is difficult to say if Miami is an attractive destination for Suh at this point.

Although it is a guessing game, of the teams that are rumored to be in the Suh sweepstakes currently, look for the Colts to come out on top. Money will obviously play a role, but Indy can offer Suh the chance to contend for a Super Bowl.

The Colts made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game last season, and with a force like Suh anchoring the defense, they could take the next step.

Mark Ingram

Former first-round pick Mark Ingram finally enjoyed a breakout season with the New Orleans Saints in 2014, and he made it happen at an ideal time, as he will enter free agency as a fairly hot commodity.

In 13 games, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star rushed for 964 yards and nine touchdowns, which helped earn him his first career Pro Bowl nod. The fact that he bolstered the Saints running game so significantly could compel the team to keep him, but others will make offers as well.

One team that is set to at least kick the tires on Ingram is the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Lyons Yellin of WWL-TV in New Orleans:

Philly would have been an unthinkable landing spot for Ingram previously, but that is no longer the case, as the Eagles and Buffalo Bills have agreed to a deal that will send linebacker Kiko Alonso to Philadelphia in exchange for superstar running back LeSean McCoy, per ESPN.com's Adam Schefter and Mike Rodak.

News of the deal sent shockwaves through the league, especially since the electric McCoy appeared to be an ideal fit in head coach Chip Kelly's dynamic offense.

According to Peter King of TheMMQB.com, though, Kelly didn't like the fact that McCoy lacked decisiveness as a runner at times:

That certainly wouldn't be an issue with Ingram, as he is a straight-line power back who can get up the field in a hurry. While Ingram wouldn't be as big of a factor in the passing game as McCoy was, the Eagles have another former Saint in Darren Sproles for that purpose.

Philadelphia should have plenty of money to spend in free agency once McCoy is off the books, which means it may be able to offer Ingram more than anyone else.

Due to that and the mystique of getting to play in Kelly's high-octane offense, the Eagles look to be the best and likeliest fit for Ingram.

Trent Cole

Pass-rushers are always hot commodities on the open market due to the importance of pressuring the quarterback, which means longtime Eagles star Trent Cole shouldn't have much trouble finding work.

The Eagles released Cole after he accumulated 85.5 sacks in 10 years with the organization. The 32-year-old star primarily played as an outside linebacker over the past two seasons after spending the bulk of his career at defensive end.

He has shown an ability to excel both standing up and with his hand in the dirt, which means he could be appealing to almost any team in the league. According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to pursue Cole:

Also, the New York Jets figure to have some interest in the two-time Pro Bowl selection:

Cole has been remarkably consistent over the years, and he has been durable as well, having missed only a handful of games. While he may no longer be a stud pass-rusher, he can still be an important part of a successful NFL defense.

Since the Jets have a new defensive-minded head coach in Todd Bowles, it is likely that he will push for more playmakers on that side of the ball. New York has a poor secondary, but bringing in a guy like Cole could help in that regard by limiting time for opposing quarterbacks.

Cole seems like a good fit in Bowles' defense, and he would most definitely be used in some exciting and creative ways. With that in mind, it is a decent bet that Cole will be rolling with Gang Green in 2015.
