Denver Broncos Preview for 2009 NFL Season!

robert meyerAug 18, 2009

Denver Broncos in 2008:

The Denver Broncos had an average season in Denver.  They finished the season 8-8 and in second place behind the San Diego Chargers.  On top of getting second place, the Broncos also missed the playoffs. The Broncos had the lead in the division for 16 weeks and finally lost the lead on the last game of the season. The Broncos really struggled on the defensive end. They are 29th in overall defense. They are 26th passing yds allowed with 228.6yds per game. The Broncos are 27th in rush yds allowed per game with 146.1 yds per game. The Broncos were excellent on offense in 2008. They were 2nd in overall offense in 2008 only behind the New Orleans Saints. They were 3rd in passing and 12th in rushing.  Jay Cutler played great last season; he passed for over 4000yds and threw for 25Tds. However he did throw 18ints.

The Broncos in the offseason:

The Broncos made some big moves in the offseason. The Broncos fired their coach Mike Shannahan and hired Josh McDaniels as a replacement head coach. They acquired Kyle Orton from the Bears in a trade that sent Jay Cutler to the Bears. They also received some future draft picks. Kyle Orton had a good season with the bears last year.  Orton threw for nearly 3000yds and 18Tds.  Orton needs to work on his completing a better percentage of his passes. He was only completing 58% of his passes last season. He needs to get that number up in the 60’s to have great success in Denver. The Broncos also drafted a great running back in the 2009 NFL Draft, Knowshon Moreno from UGA. Moreno was one of the best running backs in the entire NCAA last year. Moreno should have a great rookie season. Denver expects a lot from this guy.  The Broncos also acquired an amazing safety, Brian Dawkins. Dawkins was an eagle last year and lead them all the way to the NFC title game. Dawkins could help this defense greatly in 2009.

The Broncos in the preseason:

The Broncos played poorly in the first preseason game of the season, especially Kyle Orton. Orton threw 3 Ints in the preseason game. Orton obviously has some things he needs to work on. Orton didn’t have his number 1 target at wide receiver, Brandon Marshall. Marshall was out with an injury. Marshall should start in the next preseason game.  Knowshon Moreno played ok in his first preseason game of his career. He had 3 carries for 18yds. However, Moreno did injure himself in the game. He injured his knee and will be out 1-2 weeks. He should be able to return for the Bronco’s last preseason game on September 3rd against Cardinals.

The Bronco’s season preview:

The Broncos look to do real good this year. Their defense should do much better than last year with Brian Dawkins leading that defense at safety. He can make a real difference maker. The offense won’t be as good as last year. They have a new quarterback, Kyle Orton. It will take some time for Orton to adjust and develop some chemistry with his receivers. I believe that the Broncos will get 7 to 9 wins this year depending on how their defense plays. I also believe that the Broncos will finish second in the division.
