Eagles, McCoy Not Discussing Contract Restructuring
Monday, March 2
Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer refuted a report that indicated the Eagles approached McCoy about restructuring his deal. Paul Domowitch of Philly.com reported over the weekend that the Eagles could ask their Pro Bowl back to take a pay cut.
McCoy, 26, has an $11.95 million cap hit for 2015, according to Spotrac. The deal calls for a $9.75 million base salary, a massive number at a position where teams are increasingly looking to cut costs. McCoy's cap number is the second-highest among running backs behind Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, per Spotrac.
The former Pitt star has gone over 1,000 yards each of the last two seasons under Chip Kelly. Taking advantage of the holes provided by Kelly's read-option looks, McCoy led the NFL in rushing in 2013 and came back with a 1,319-yard campaign last season.
Underlying numbers, however, indicate McCoy might be on the downside of his career. Pro Football Focus' grading system ranked McCoy 55th among the 57 qualifying running backs last season. Football Outsiders' DVOA metric was a little kinder but still had him 24th.
Given the fungibility of the running back position, it wouldn't have been a surprise to see the Eagles approach McCoy about shaving a few million off their cap. But the structure of McCoy's deal calls for a decline in base salary in 2016, so it's possible the team is merely doing all it can to avoid tying any long-term dead money to its future cap.
