Honda Classic 2015: Leaderboard Highlights and Reaction from Sunday

Matt FitzgeraldMar 1, 2015

Inclement weather during the week will force the Honda Classic to end late, but Sunday's action, which featured third-round play and the start to the final round, hosted plenty of excellent plot twists.

Ian Poulter built a three-stroke lead entering the last round thanks to a third-round 66 to back up the 64 he posted in Round 2. However, the Englishman began to leak a bit of oil and now finds himself tied with compatriot Paul Casey at seven under.

Play was suspended due to darkness, and while the course's wetter conditions have made the ball stop faster, it's also made approach shots longer and scoring still difficult.

The par-three fifth hole was the site of a shanked Poulter tee shot. At the time, he was well out in front of the rest of the field, getting as low as nine-under on the tough PGA National track.

Before Poulter had a chance to strike his bogey attempt, playing partner Patrick Reed rolled in a bumpy birdie putt from off the green to card a surprising two.

The bogey putt missed for Poulter and left him tied with Reed. Golf reporter Scott Michaux recorded what Poulter had to say about his ill-fated shot afterward:

Unfortunately, the bad vibes carried over when Poulter hooked his tee shot into the water on the par-four sixth hole. A tough lie off that drop forced Poulter to use a hybrid to reach the green from the thick rough, yet he found the putting surface and got down in two to minimize the damage to one shot lost.

Then the Ryder Cup stalwart showed his resolve, stepping to the par-three seventh tee with a 6-iron, striking it stiff to set up a huge birdie.

It wound up being the final hole of the day for the final group, which Reed bogeyed to fall one shot back at six under overall.

Given how gritty Reed has proved to be in his young career, though, he can't be dismissed as a legitimate contender. Golf Central highlighted his recent meteoric rise:

Birdies on three of his first four holes to begin the last round allowed Casey to make up a ton of ground. Casey capped his Sunday in style with a nifty approach to the par-four ninth, where he used his muscular might to find the green hole-high from 147 yards out in the left rough and rolled it in for a fourth birdie.

Golf Channel's Jason Sobel recalled a relevant Casey quote from his close call at the Northern Trust Open:

Storylines abound for Monday's unusual conclusion in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Reed has a chance to win his fifth PGA Tour event at age 24—a stunning accomplishment for the American star. The talent has always been there for Casey, but he's been held back by inconsistency and injuries. After losing in a playoff last week, he has a shot to get it done this time around.

Having never won a stroke-play event in the U.S., Poulter has to be licking his chops after the sensational final full swing he pulled off Sunday.

No one can count out Phil Mickelson, either. After missing the cut in his prior two starts, Lefty is surging and benefited from Poulter's double bogey. He played eight holes in his last round and is four under par, tied for fourth at the moment and well within striking distance just three shots behind.
