Anthony Fasano to Be Released by Chiefs: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappFeb 26, 2015

With young star Travis Kelce on the roster, the Kansas City Chiefs will reportedly cut veteran tight end Anthony Fasano to clear up cap space and open the door for Kelce to play an even bigger role in the offense.

The Chiefs announced the release.

Jeff Darlington of the NFL Network said Fasano was a victim of the salary cap:

Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star has more on the cap implications:

Fasano finished the 2014 season with 25 receptions for 226 yards and four touchdowns. His blocking ability in the running game generally kept him on the field, though often at the expense of Kelce getting regular snaps, a pecking order many Chiefs fans and writers lamented given Kelce's vastly superior athleticism and impact in the passing game.

With Fasano on the way out, Kelce will surely factor in more heavily in Kansas City's offense in 2015.

Fasano will likely find another team in need of an in-line tight end, however. After nine seasons spent between the Dallas Cowboys, the Miami Dolphins and the Chiefs, he's proven himself to be a reliable if unspectacular option at the position and a decent target in the red zone (he has four or more touchdown receptions in five seasons).

His time with Kansas City may be coming to a close, but Fasano's services will be needed elsewhere.
