Bears Have Questions: It's Not The QB Position

Justin HrubyAug 17, 2009

So when sitting on my couch tunning into the Bears taking on the Buffalo Bills Saturday night, the only think i expected to see is Jay Culter throw a few passes to his receivers and walk off the field with no injuries.  That happened, granted Jay Cutler did not exactly electrify Bears Nation, (I know, i read a lot of article and bloggers saying the  season is already over, and Denver Bronco fans saying Cutler is our problem).  Cutler went 5-10 for 64 yards, with an interception, and definitely was not on the same page with #1 WR Devin Hester.  It could of been worse, we could still be watching Kyle Orton in a Bears uniform throwing interceptions all over the field (three this weekend).

What seems to be blinding to most Bears fans is that the chemistry of Cutler and his receiving core can't get any worse than what we saw in Buffalo.  If it does in the next three weeks, guess what?  It doesn't matter, IT'S PRESEASON!  What does matter is what the final score is on Sept 13th in Green Bay and so forth.

But lets say for the sake of the argument, lets take into account what we saw Saturday night:

- Yes, Cutler didn't dazzle us we know that.  The only thing i hated was that Rex Grossman throw off his back foot that stayed in the air til my next birthday.  That begs the question:  Is that throwing off the back foot something that Ron Turner is coaching?

- No pass rush from the defensive line, yeah Alex Brown recorded a sack, but that was all we saw out of 3 series with the 1st string defense.  Mark Anderson saw action against 2nd stringers and still didn't make an impact.  The hurry up offense of Buffalo quickly exhausted the Bears, which begs the question:  What is this "Rod Marinelli Magic" he is bringing back to this D-Line?

- Terrible pass coverage from our secondary, Nathan Vasher had a terrible game, couldn't cover white on rice at a cheap chinese buffet restaurant.  The entire Buffalo QB core went 29 for 24 for 265 yards and aTD.  Trent Edwards went 10-10 76 yards, and Ryan Fitzpatrick looked like a 2nd string Pro Bowler going 13-16 for 143 yards.  Which begs the question: When is Charles Tillman and Zachary Bowman getting back into the line up cause I am tired of seeing Trumane McBride and Corey Graham with the 1st stringers.  But don't be too worried, it looks like Al Alfalava looks like he'll make Bear's fans forget who Mike Brown was...maybe.

-The offensive line did not give Cutler a whole lot of protection with still rookie Chris Williams at Right Tackle. Frank Omiyale and Josh Beekman battling the Left Guard (no clear cut winner yet).  Granted Cutler didn't get sacked.  No question to beg, just block better.

So to sum it all up Cutler shouldn't get too much negative criticism as much as most people are throwing at him.  Some of these other positions that have much more of a concern than an already proven quarterback.  My guess is that Bears Nation was expection Cutler to go 12-12 for 147 yards and 2 TD's, but just remember the Bears have 16 games that count and 3 more that don't.
