Dallas Cowboys Injury Update: August 17

Derek MajorAug 17, 2009

The Cowboys are getting two starters back as well as a couple of backup linebackers, but it's not all good news as the Cowboys No. 1 receiver leaves practice with a sprained wrist.

According to Coach Wade Phillips cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman were expected to return to practice today, but Jenkins participated in Sunday's afternoon session saying that his ankle wasn't 100 percent, but getting better.

Jenkins shouldn't be too far behind in the camp battle between him and Orlando Scandrick, but you have to give Scandrick the leg up because of his performance on Thursday night.

Scandrick was tested early on two deep balls but broke up both plays and didn't allow a catch. He's also played better than Jenkins in practice as he's always around the ball and not afraid to help in the running game.

As for Newman, he's still expected to make his return today.

Linebackers Steve Octavien and Stephen Hodge also returned to practice Sunday. Octavien missed a week of practice with a strained groin and Hodge missed a few days with a sore knee. Rookie linebacker Brandon Williams will miss a few more practices with shoulder soreness.

Receiver Roy Williams sprained his wrist during Sunday morning's practice and is listed day-to-day. The injury occurred when Williams landed hard after getting tied up with Scandrick, but the injury isn't considered serious.

When the injury occurred, Williams tried to practice through it but wasn't able to. After complaining of pain in his wrist before the Cowboys afternoon practice, X-rays were taken but were negative, however an MRI is scheduled for today.

With Williams out, Miles Austin and Sam Hurd will get more reps as they battle for the third receiver spot. Hurd has an early lead as he shined in the Cowboys preseason game against the Raiders catching five passes for 79 yards while Austin dropped the only pass thrown to him in the game.
