Jacoby Jones to Chargers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsMar 6, 2015

Jacoby Jones has been a great playmaker throughout his eight-year career. After spending three memorable seasons in Baltimore, the veteran wide receiver is reportedly getting a fresh start with the Chargers on a two-year deal, per the team.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the deal. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that the deal is worth up to $5.5 million.

Even though quarterback Joe Flacco got most of the credit for Baltimore's Super Bowl run in 2012, Jones played an instrumental role in that championship.

Jones caught the game-tying 70-yard touchdown in the final minute against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. In the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, he had a 56-yard touchdown catch and a 108-yard kickoff-return score to start the third quarter.

Despite those heroics, Jones' role gradually decreased with the Ravens. He bottomed out in 2014 with nine receptions for 131 yards, though he did rank second behind Cincinnati Bengals defensive back Adam Jones, averaging 30.6 yards per kickoff return.

The Ravens are always fighting a battle with the salary cap, so Jones became expendable. Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com noted on Twitter after Jones was released that Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome had a lot of things to work on:

Baltimore's loss is Jones' gain. He can go to a situation that will maximize his unique talents, which are mostly on special teams with a little help at wide receiver thrown in, too.

The one drawback for Jones at this point in his career is his age. He's going to be 31 years old in July, which is ancient by NFL standards. The versatile speedster hasn't shown any signs of slowing down thus far, as evidenced by his lofty return numbers in 2014, so there seems to be plenty left in the tank.

Even if Jones is unable to find many receptions in his new home, the value he can provide in changing field position as a kick returner has tremendous value. It's not the kind of skill that is going to generate a lot of headlines in this fantasy football culture, but he's a low-cost option who specializes in a crucial area of the game.
