This Week In Professional Wrestling-Ish

Dale BurkeAug 16, 2009

Note: I use my own pictures because currently i do not have the right to use pictures from World Wrestling Entertainment. once i get permission to use either show logos or superstar photos I probably will.

Okay, so I can't attest to RoH and local wrestling TVs but I do have five pro wrestling shows that i can watch during a normal week. next week will have Hard Justice factored in as well as the next week will have Summer slam...

Here is how I grade the week in wrestling. I grade on 5 things:

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football
With Jayson Tatum sidelined, Celtics' fourth-quarter comeback falls short in Game 7 loss to 76ers
  1. Performance (Best show)
  2. Event importance
  3. Promos (on the stick)
  4. Hype
  5. Watchability
With eight hours of wrestling each week i fast forward through a lot of stuff so watchability is more like a "Did I miss anything that could be important because i was fast forwarding my tivo"?
I also give the best examples of each category shown this week. almost like a weekly award. for performance its show that had the best card, event importance is an event that happens that I think helped move the story forward or plant the seed of a new story to come. promos who cut the best promo this week (with an unintended copyright breach quoting said promo but not all of it.)
Hype which story was built on in a light that would make one think they were headlining the upcoming ppv. Watchability goes to the match i could see myself showing over and over again.
This week WWE and TNA had some good shows. I will not lie they could have been better but they were good shows.  WWE has four of the five wrestling shows I watch a week.
Raw did okay but wasnt stellar. I covered my thoughts on raw in my other article but seriously slaughter not being on screen as much as past guest hosts probably helped the program a lot.
match of monday was definitely the divas femme fatale fourway gail kim and beth phoenix could have fought with two wet mops as their opposition and this match would have still been good. there was a moment i thought kelly kelly was going to win but it was ruined by alicia who had a few moves that impressed me herself. in the end gail kim's hand was raised and is now the #1 contender for the diva's championship, so much for gail being a knockout not a diva meh.
ECW was Short and sweet kept me going. The only problem i have with EcW is the covering of HBK's return to DX. I understand that HBK is a big draw still and they anticipate ratings for raw coming out of this but that 5 minutes could have been added to tyler reks or yoshi tatsu or even sheamus, and personally for ecw to be "focusing on the new talent initiative" i think them 5 minutes would have been better spent that way.Building a feud with Hurricane and Burchill looks like it will play out possibly beyond ecw. The main event was good now keep in mind we don't know how regal got #1 contender but the match he had with tommy tuesday night was possibly one of the best matches ive seen tommy in for a long time. and that match as the closer to the show was perfect. match of the night had to be Shelton vs Ryder, after ryders match with christian a couple weeks ago these two guys redeemed ryders stock. Looks like captain charisma may have been too much for young ryder to overcome as far as putting on a great match but he more than made up for it this week.
Impact was a good show I liked a lot of the stuff i seen when rhino goring the crap out of jessy neal for hte umpteenth time is the low point of a show i can honestly say im happy with it. thursdays show saw the return of christy hemme who looked pretty darned well in her match with SoJo to say i was impressed with christy hemme is an understatement but still she wasnt the most impressive this week. aj styles vs matt morgan was a rubber match that felt like it had wieght to is had some circumstance involved normally id cry about AJ Styles slapping on a submission but how they got from him attacking matt morgans 'hurt leg' relentlessly to the figure 4 was well done. and having matt go over aj clean was great in my opinion great match with a big match feel to it.
Superstars was also short and sweet: I think rosa looked pretty good in her match with Carlito vs mickie and kofi. the finish was great. match of the night here though was definitely morisson vs DH smith  the only thing i fast forwarded here was the commercials. it was a great match dh smith showing a little bit of technical skill as well as his brute strength.
On to Smack down which I watched all of this morning as well as superstars and id have to say it was hard to decide which match on smackdown stood out the most. in possibly the biggest shock ive been delivered in a while melina and Layla el's match was good. Layla went to the attack dominated the better half of the match and melina came back, i think the most impressive thing about this is Layla isnt usually known for her in ring abilities and this week she Layla brought the A in A-game.  selling the pain of delivering some moves and recieving some perfectly imo, i was truly impressed by her even though she lost her bout. the main event of CM Punk vs Morrison and hour 2s   Hardy vs Hart Dynasty were both well done, it was nice for them to distinguish who they want the fans to think are heel and face. they still have matt hardy being a little sketch ball-ish like they dont know whether he will face jeff or retract all the mean things he did to jeff and look for his forgiveness, but at the end of the show i know punk is the heel and jeff was the face. jeff didnt even bother with punk vs morrison but punk came out and stuck his nose in the handicap match. well done. this whole feud with vince and teddy long has been good too. over all smackdown is my show of the week the performances on smackdown were just great and i dont think i seen a match that i thought had a lot of cheesy things happen.
the event this week that stuck out the most for me was matt morgan telling kurt angle after morgan had worked his butt off to be in the main event mafia that he was willing to throw it away if it meant he was possibly going to walk out of Hard justice with his first tna world title.(i think it would be his first tna title period.)
Best promo this week i would have to say goes to cm Punk. there is just something great about the words "I figured out how to lead these fans on to the path of righteousness, and that is to End Jeff Hardy at Summerslam" that just had me ready to mark out.
The greatest hype this week has to go to DX they dominated all 4 of wwes shows i dont know if from the vault was actually broadcast on smackdown but on hulu they reshowed HBK Shelton Benjamin pt 2 in its entirety. it is obvious the professional wrestling hype machine had shawn micheals as it main target this past week. the only downside is i think the shawn micheals thing being talked about on other shows over matches that do not contain legacy or dx watered down the perception i had that wwe was giving other people a chance.
The watchability factor was there for quite a few matches (2 concerning morisson) but the match that i think stood out the best was aj matt morgan's rubber match thursday it had a big match feel to it from bell to bell and it definately made me want to check out hard justice this sunday on pay perview. purely great match and a good breath of fresh air that has been needed in tna for a bit now. the whole purpose of that 3 series was to get past eachother for a shot at the title nothing personal no back story just earn your spot in the main event and this 3rd match was better than both its prequels.
Quick List:
  1. Performance : Smackdown.
  2. Event: Matt Morgan doesn't throw away opportunities.
  3. Promo: Punk needs to End Hardy in 9 days.
  4. Hype: Dx Finds its smile
  5. Watchability: Morgan Aj rubber match thursday night impact.
as usual thanks for reading hope you all enjoyed this week in wrestling as much as i have.
