Newton Likely to Let Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson Set Market

While Newton and the Panthers are seemingly both interested in working out the details of a long-term extension, the 25-year-old is willing to remain patient.
Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer has more:
"Newton's representatives were scheduled to meet with the Panthers on Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to a league source with knowledge of the meeting.
With Seattle's Russell Wilson and Indianapolis' Andrew Luck in line for record-breaking deals, Newton is content to let those negotiations reset the market for quarterbacks, according to two league sources. Then, sources say, if the Panthers' offer meets Newton's expectations, he is interested in remaining with Carolina for the long term.
"

He may not be a future great like Luck or a Super Bowl winner like Wilson, but Newton is the face of the franchise in Carolina.
This past season, he threw for 3,127 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while also rushing for 539 yards and five scores. It was a down season from Newton's perspective, though he did miss two games due to injuries.
On Jan. 21, Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer provided a statement from Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman discussing Newton as the team's long-term quarterback at last month's Senior Bowl:
"We want him here. I want him here. The contract, in its time, will take place. I'm not going to get into the when, where, why and how of the contract. But we believe in Cam. He's our franchise quarterback.
What I feel confident of is, in time, something will happen. He's our franchise quarterback. I want him here.
"

In 2013, the Panthers went 12-4 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The team earned a first-round bye but fell to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.
In 2014, the team regressed in the regular season, going 7-8-1, yet the Panthers squeaked into the playoffs after winning the NFC South for the second straight year. After upending the Arizona Cardinals in the Wild Card Round, Newton and Co. fell to the Seattle Seahawks.
Newton is set to make $14.7 million in 2015. If the two sides cannot come to a long-term agreement, the Panthers could use the franchise tag, though they would take a salary-cap hit.
