Michael Vick Signing Through The Eyes Of a Philadelphia Eagle Fan

josh davisAug 16, 2009

As a most-of-life-long Eagles fan, here is my take on the signing of Michael Vick.

Shut up about it. It's happened. It's over. Complaints, protests, boycotts, they are all pointless.

This was not done with any intentions in replacing McNabb, or to make a threat on his job as the Eagles starter. As it has been said, on numerous occasion's, it's HIS job.

To even think Vick could come in, and over-take an established top 5 quarterback, on and established top 5 team, is ridiculous. Vick couldn't, and shouldn't have been put in a situation to try that for any of the 32 teams.

To me, this was to show the rest of the league, and the nation, that second chances should be given to those who, at least show initiative, deserve them.

I believe Vick does deserve it. Obviously I am not the only one.

This, I believe, was also to help Michael Vick to show the other teams in the league that he is still the athlete he was, and can contribute to a winning program (putting fear in some teams, i.e. the New York Football Giants, was also an added bonus).

All too often teams assume the first position that needs to be filled to help a program return, or get to, dominance is the quarterback. And all too often, they fail, miserably.

Quarterback should be one of the LAST pieces put in place, after a steady line, decent enough receiver corps, and at least a back-by-committee approach. Not to mention a defense.

So for Vick to go to a team that is struggling to find a viable option at QB (the list is too long to include), would just add to the problem.

So Philadelphia stepped in. Signed him. Took him under their wing (not intended), and will get him ready to contribute in some fashion to their offense, to show they believe in Michael Vick, and second chances.

It's the best possible move on both parts. Vick gets a slower-paced approach to getting back into playing, and Philadelphia gets another weapon to add to their offense.

So, as I stated earlier, the protests, the complaining, the boycotts, they are all-for-not. Because the deal is done, and nothing will change it.

Just continue to support your Birds, because he was going to go somewhere, might as well been us.

I would rather have the chance to see if the man can still, "do what he do" in our backfield, instead of letting someone else the shot.
