Kentucky Basketball: Top Storylines to Follow in Final Weeks of Regular Season

Bobby ReaganFeb 20, 2015

It's hard to believe, but there are only five games left in the regular season for the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team. The Wildcats are obviously rolling with an undefeated record, and they are seemingly head and shoulders above everyone else in the country.

Having stayed undefeated for now over 80 percent of its schedule, Kentucky needs to prove that it can put away lesser opponents in its next five games before heading into the SEC tournament. This may not seem like an important stretch, but the team has been playing to the level of its competition recently and needs to prove that it can beat teams handily heading into the postseason.

We'll take a look at the top storylines to follow in the final weeks of the regular season.

Andrew Harrison

1 of 4

Andrew Harrison has been one of the most impressive players over Kentucky's last seven games. Starting with a 15-point performance at Missouri, he's been playing off the charts.

He's averaging over 11 points a game in that stretch and recording over two assists for every turnover he's had. Harrison has been the steady hand at point guard, attacking the rim under control and getting his teammates involved.

Having the ball in his hands down the stretch of a close game practically guarantees a win for Kentucky. In the same seven-game stretch, he's missed just three free throws out of 31 attempts. You couldn't ask for much more out of your point guard. While people continue to clamor for Tyler Ulis, Harrison is quietly going about his business and looking like the star recruit he once was.

NBA Draft Rumors

2 of 4

Well, this will be an answer every year that John Calipari is the head coach at Kentucky. He continues to recruit topnotch talent and will have to battle rumors of who is leaving and who is not. Last season, people assumed the Wildcats would be losing Willie Cauley-Stein and some sort of combination between Dakari Johnson, Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison and Alex Poythress.

Instead, they all decided to return to Lexington, and now we have the Kentucky team we know today. The same sort of thing will happen this season. NBADraft.net has six (Andrew Harrison, Trey Lyles, Johnson, Poythress, Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns) getting drafted this season. DraftExpress has six as well, with Devin Booker going instead of Poythress.

The lesson? Nobody has any idea of what's going to happen.

Who Will Be Honored with Postseason Awards?

3 of 4

Several Wildcats are candidates to receive all-conference accolades after the conclusion of the regular season, and for most cases they are battling their teammates for the award.

A Kentucky player will win SEC Player of the Year. It will most likely go to Cauley-Stein, but has he really been better than Booker or Towns? You could make a case for each player.

Cauley-Stein is the most versatile defensive player, but you could argue that Booker has been better on both ends of the floor all season.

What about SEC Freshman of the Year? Again, does it go to Booker or Towns? How do you determine who wins Sixth Man of the Year when you platoon an entire substitution? Can you pick just one?

Will the platoon system prevent players from getting nationally recognized as well? Cauley-Stein will make a case for All-American but might get bumped to second team because his stats are diminished due to a lack of minutes.

Will Kentucky Go Undefeated?

4 of 4

It's the question everyone is asking: Can this team go undefeated the rest of the way? There's still a trip to Georgia looming and home games against Arkansas and Florida.

For what it's worth, my prediction is that the Wildcats enter the postseason with a zero in the loss column. This team seems to have a certain swagger about it when playing, almost knowing it can't lose because of its talent.
