Imagine there was a college football playoff: Round 3 and Championship
Through Round 1 and Round 2 of our 16-team playoff, we've seen the upstart Boise St. Broncos pull upsets over the Ohio State Buckeye and Texas Longhorns. Now they take on the defending National Champions Florida Gators.
The other semi-final game pits the Oklahoma Sooners vs the USC Trojans in a matchup of two of the best programs in the last decade.
No. 1 Florida Gators vs No. 12 Boise St. Broncos
The Gators have played the best defense of any team in the playoffs and it continues with an opening drive interception of Boise St. QB Kellen Moore. Moore hasn't thrown an interception in the playoffs, but the he gives the ball to the Gators on the Bronco 31.
Florida Gator RB Emmanuel Moody bursts up the middle to score on a 31 yard run, and the Gators go up quickly 7-0.
Florida DE Carlos Dunlap sacks Moore three times in the first half, and the Broncos have their worst offensive half of the playoffs. The Gators head to the half up 17-3.
The second half isn't much better for Boise St. The Gators defense forces two more turnovers, and Tim Tebow scores on a five yard quarterback keeper to make the score 24-3. Boise St. never musters much offense in a game the Gators dominate; winning 31-10. They are headed to the national title game for the second year in a row. The Broncos proved to the nation that a mid-major could compete with nation's collegiate powers by getting to the national semi-finals.
No 2. Oklahoma Sooners vs No. 3 USC Trojans
The game is has it all. Former Trojans and Sooners dot the sideline. Marcus Allen, Matt Leinhart, Barry Switzer, and Adrian Peterson are all in attendance. They hype surrounding this game is second only to the national title.
A spectacular back and forth game ensues. Sam Bradford is 14-19 in the first half for 134 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. USC quarterback Aaron Corp has a similar start going 12-18 for 152 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Both defenses force one turnover each, and each picks up three sacks. The score is just as close. It's 14-14 at the half.
In the second half the Trojans are the first to crack. Oklahoma Sooner RB Chris Brown rumbles for TD score on a 67 yard draw. It's now 21-14. The Trojans come right back with Corp leading a 78 yard drive going 5-of-6 for 62 yards passing. USC Fullback Stanly Havili dives in from one yard out. It's 21-21. Both teams add FG's in the fourth quarter to make it 24-24 with 1:13 left in the game.
Sooner Brian Jackson picks off Corp at midfield, and the Sooners have a chance to win the game. On a seemingly harmless screen pass from Sam Bradford, RB DeMarco Murrary breaks three tackles and scores from the 22-yard line. USC has :34 seconds left, but the game ends on a failed hail mary pass. The Sooners win 31-24, and ready for the rematch with the Gators.
Championship Game
No. 1 Florida Gators vs No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners
Texas Fans are still muttering about being not being in national title game even after beating the Sooners. The Longorns can only blame themselves after losing in the second round to the Boise St. Broncos this year.
The Gators have looked dominant so far in the playoffs. They have won their three games by an average of 19 points, and they strike early and often against the Sooners. Tim Tebow throws a touchdown. Speedy running back Chris Rainey adds another. The defense returns a Sam Bradford fumble for a touchdown. It's 21-0 before the firsr quarter ends.
Florida adds two FG's before the half. It's now 27-0 and a stunned contingent of Sooners head for the exits.
They should have stayed. Sooner WR Ryan Broyles scores on 71 yard Sam Bradford pass. The score is 27-7. The Sooners get a 3-and-out, and Bradford goes back to work. A 65 yard drive ends on a DeMarco Murray two yard TD plunge. It's 27-14. The Gators kick a FG to go up 30-14.
The Sooner defense continues to stymie the Gator offense. Sooner DT Gerald McCoy sacks Tim Tebow on 3rd -and-11, and Sooners get the ball back. Another drive, another touchdown, and it's 30-21. There's 5:36 left in the game.
The Sooners have held the Gators to 91 second half yards, and again force a 3-and-out. The Sooners drive to the Gator 27, where Sam Bradford finds Ryan Broyles streaking down the sideline for a 27 yard touchdown. It's now 30-28, with 1:01 left.
Oklahoma attempts an onsides kick, which they recover! Could the Sooners really complete the epic comeback? :02 seconds left at the Florida 24, the Sooner's kicker Jimmy Stevens is about to attempt a 41 yard FG. It's up and it sails wide right... Gators win 30-28. That's three National Titles for Urban Meyer and Florida in four years.
