NFL Draft 2015: 1st-Round Mock Draft Based on Day 1 Scouting-Combine Buzz
The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine has officially commenced, and while a single workout has yet to take place, we've already witnessed some potentially draft-altering comments.
That's right, we're talking interviews here.
Interestingly enough, the comments in question weren't uttered by any of the event's participants. Combine Buzz from Day 1
All right, let's take a look at why the above mock draft played out the way it did.
Before the combine began, everyone had a pretty solid idea the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would select a quarterback with the first overall pick. There was even some speculation via Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com that the team was leaning in the direction of Florida State signal-caller Jameis Winston.
Well, on Wednesday, head coach Love Smith had plenty to say about Winston's past, praising the quarterback during his press conference, via Yasinskas:
"To me, I think [Winston]'s told us an awful lot with how he's handled it. It's not like he's getting ready to go into the NFL and scrutiny is coming his way. He's gone through it a couple years now and he's answered the bell. That's what you have to do. You have to have tunnel vision and do your job. Looking from the outside, that's what he's been able to do.
"
Smith also added, "We've already done a lot of research. We're going to do a lot more research on both guys. From what I know right now, yeah, we're OK with where [Winston] is."
Judging by those comments, it doesn't appear as though the Buccaneers are overly concerned with Winston's checkered past. If that's the case, the former Seminole should absolutely be considered the front-runner to go No. 1 overall due to his experience running a pro-style offense similar to Tampa Bay's.
So, if Winston is going No. 1 overall, the Tennessee Titans have their choice of which player to add to a shaky defensive line, right?
Not so fast.
While many draft analysts see the Titans grabbing the likes of defensive tackle Leonard Williams at No. 2, indications Wednesday were that the team might actually be leaning toward taking a quarterback.
During his press conference, via Marc Sessler of NFL.com, Titans general manager Ruston Webster alluded to seeking out a quarterback in this year's draft, "That's really square one for everybody, finding that quarterback. We're in a good position that way (with the draft)."
But, what about Zach Mettenberger? Well, according to Sessler, Webster doesn't appear ready to commit to the second-year player, "We're not in a position to commit to anything. (Zach) knows we like him, he knows we value him, and we'll just kind of go from there."
Sure, it's still extremely early in the process, but it does appear the Titans are ready to do their due diligence on this year's quarterback prospects. If the team likes one enough, it could pull the trigger with the second pick in the draft.
Keep in mind this can all change in the blink of an eye.
After all, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, via Chase Goodbread of NFL.com, both Winston and Mariota will be throwing at the combine. Should one falter in the eyes of league scouts and executives, these teams could be singing a different tune in short order.
So, for now, with quarterbacks potentially going at No. 1 and No. 2, the rest of the draft is shaken up quite a bit.
The Jacksonville Jaguars can now grab Williams at No. 3 overall, solidifying their defensive line for years to come. The Oakland Raiders are still likely to select a wide receiver like Alabama's Amari Cooper, giving the Washington Redskins their choice of an elite pass-rusher or an offensive lineman. The New York Jets miss out on a new signal-caller in this situation, but plenty of solid options remain on the board at No. 6 overall.
