.big Roc's Raiders Rookie Report

big ROC Stockton, CAAug 15, 2009

As the first preseason game has been played we finally got a chance to see what our rookies have to bring to the table.  As always we have a bunch of gifted athletes to work with.  Here's what caught my eye in their first games in the NFL.

Round 1.  WR Darrius Heyward Bey.  He did display good hands and route running on that quick slant for eight yards with a defender all over him.  He also drew double coverage when he ran deep routes which opened things up for others.

Round 2.  SS Mike Mitchell.  He didn't get to play with a minor injury.  I looking forward to seeing him as he is eager to hit somebody.  I read he was told to scale back a bit as he was being too physical.

Round 3.  DE Matt Shaughnessy.  I liked the effort he was giving out there.  He finished with one tackle but was always running hard to the ball.

Round 4.  WR Louis Murphy.  Very good first game for the former Gator.  He runs excellent routes already and had catches of 18 and 22 yards.  He would have had another long catch but he got "lit up" be the safety.

Round 4.  LB Slade Norris.  He had a very solid game with four tackles and was always around the ball.  He looks like one of those guys with non-stop motor.  He never looked "lost" out there as you might expect since he was a DE in college.

Round 6.  LB/DE Stryker Sulak.  We cut him before training camp????

Round 6.  TE Brandon Meyers  He had a nice 18 yard catch setting us up at the two yard line.  He did a very good job run-blocking and that is exactly what we drafted him for.

WR Nick Miller(pictured above).  Excellent beginning to his NFL career.  He displayed good concentration and hands as he dove for a 48 yard catch setting up a score.  He also had a 28 yard kick return and a 10 yard PR.  He has very quick feet and is a threat to score whenever he has the ball.

SS Jerome Boyd played in the box a whole lot and was consistently flying to the ball finishing with seven tackles.  He played LB in college and at 6'2" 225 lbs is going to be a big, hard hitting safety.

LB  David Nixon showed good effort and had his nose in on a numer of plays.  He picked up two solo tackles.

DT Desmond Bryant is looked good out there and wasn't getting pushed around like our 340 lb DT Sands.  Bryant is very athletic at 6'5" 290 lbs and might end up being our DT on passing downs.

Well that's it RAIDER NATION hope you liked my rookie report.
