Doug Baldwin Says His Poop-Down Celebration Was Meant for Darrelle Revis

Dan CarsonFeb 17, 2015

Some unsurprising details have emerged in Doug Baldwin’s poop-troversial touchdown celebration from Super Bowl XLIX.

Baldwin, who initially refused to explain his pretending to defecate out (or on) a football, is now saying his Super Bowl squat-and-grunt was directed at—wait for it—Darrelle Revis.

The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver spoke on the subject during a radio interview on Monday with The Barbershop on 710 ESPN Seattle (h/t Deadspin’s Barry Petchesky)

Baldwin essentially said that he’s super competitive, and in the moment, he lost himself in the excitement and pooped a football:

"

It’s a competitive situation, first and foremost, and as a competitor, when I’m out there on the field, I block out everything other than the guy in front of me—what I’m supposed to be doing, what I’m supposed to be handling...you know, that would be Darrelle Revis. And I spent a lot of time in those two weeks prior to getting ready for that game just focused on my individual matchup with him. You know, I put a lot into it. And so, you know, in that moment I guess you could say that it was kind of a built-up frustration I was letting out in that sequence. You know, just between him and I, because obviously it was competitive stuff going on in that game. In that moment, I let out what I felt personally.

"

Baldwin also said he was frustrated by his lack of "opportunities" against Revis:

"

You know, it’s a mutual respect thing. But like I said on the field you get these competitive juices going through your body...it’s competitive. And, you know, so...I was kind of frustrated I didn’t get more opportunities. It was an opportunity for me to go up against one of the best guys in our league and to prove to myself. This is a measurement of myself to go up against one of the best guys in the league. So I was a little frustrated I didn’t get more opportunities, but that’s part of the game.

"

Technically, Baldwin isn’t wrong.

He didn't get many opportunities against Revis, mostly due to the fact that Revis spent the majority of the game suctioned to his hip like wet corduroys.

The catch that led to the Poop-Down was Baldwin's only reception of the game. He had been scrapping all night for something—anything—to hang his hat on, so milking what was his only moment makes sense in hindsight.

As for the question of “class”—cornerstone of sports civilization that it is—Baldwin said most of the flak he’s caught over the Poop-Down amounts to misplaced anger. He says people are projecting:

"

I get that some people would be upset about the celebration. I think it’s more so, it’s just misplaced anger towards just the fact that we lost. They want to find something to latch onto, and that’s understandable. That’s human nature. Personally, I didn’t mean anything by it, negatively toward anybody else. I do regret the fact that it cost my team 15 yards. And to the fans, ultimately I apologize to anybody who I offended in any way...to all the 12s, all the fans, that’s not what it’s about.

"

Baldwin is sorry. He will never pretend to poop out, on or around footballs ever again. Probably.

Dan is on Twitter. He is a pinnacle of class and not fake pooping on things.
