Allsports has a Bone of Contention

Walt WebbAug 14, 2009

Well there will be no sports on the web today. No, today I will have my say about local sports from personal experience.

As some may already know I have been coaching my two girls in women’s lacrosse for a while now and the more you get into it, the more certain issues start to rear their ugly heads.

It’s funny but not really, kid’s sports used to be all about the kids, which was noble and the way that it should be. People devoted their time to help kids learn the game and have fun while doing so. There are still people like that today but others have a personal agenda and become involved for basically self-serving reasons.

They become self serving and look at their associations as their little fiefdoms. This is the way I want it to be and if it retards learning skills or certain kids having fun with the game so be it. They become more concerned with the way they want things done than what should be done for the children involved and for the game itself.

Jurisdictions take over and instead of asking the child what they would like to do or what would make the experience fun for them. They see it as: “This is my house and these are the rules that I want to impose.”

We had an issue last year where a girl that wanted to play with her friends played house league in our organization. She was a good athlete so we asked if she wanted to play Rep. Yes she and her parents thought that would be great, she enjoyed playing and would learn more playing Rep lacrosse.

About half way through the season the powers that be said, “Wait a minute here, considering where she lives she needs a release from this organization in order to play.” Points were taken away from the team for every game the girl played in and the organization that was needed to give the release stalled on the decision until there were not enough games left for the girl to qualify to play in the championship tournament.

Needless to say the team lost ranking for the loss of points. The girl became a spectator and cheerleader for her team because she could not play and her parents went through miles of red tape and money for a bunch of self serving B.S.

Where is the girl this year you may ask? Playing house league with her friends without even trying to play rep because all of the bullshit left a bad taste in their mouth. Can you blame them? Allsports sure as hell can’t.

Allsports says to these organizational representatives, look in the mirror and say to yourself, what is best for the child playing, to have fun and learn the game. Never mind your political bullshit.
