Open 13 2015: Daily Scores, Results and Draw Schedule

Rob BlanchetteFeb 16, 2015

The Open 13 2015 begins in Marseille on Monday, with some of the top male players in the world taking part in the competition.

The tournament is one of five major ATP World Tour events held in France, with the final played on Sunday, February 22.

Ernests Gulbis defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in last year's final, with the champion looking to recapture last season's form.

Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka and French heroes Gael Monfils and Gilles Simons will be present.

Here, we provide you with all the scores and draws from the Open 13 as well as recaps of each day's play.

Day 7 Recap

2 of 8

Men's Single Final

No. 5 Gilles Simon def. No. 7 Gael Monfils: 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4)

Men's Doubles Final

No. 2 Marin Draganja/Henri Kontinen def. Colin Fleming/Jonathan Marray: 6-4, 3-6, 10-8

Gilles Simon won the battle of the French combatants on Sunday after beating countryman Gael Monfils 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) to claim the 2015 Open 13 title.

The 30-year-old clinched the Marseille crown for the second time in his career, having also won the tournament in 2007, and takes home the €102,900 top prize as a result.

Simon won the opening set but suffered a setback in morale when he managed to take just a single game in the second before seeing off Monfils in a tetchy tiebreak decider.

Eight years after winning his first ATP title in Marseille, Simon spoke to the official ATP Tour website following Sunday's triumph, saying:

"It was a great week, but a tough one physically. I left a lot of energy against [Borna] Coric (in the second round) and then it was hard to recover from this one. I'm happy I won here since I won my first tournament in Marseille. I hope it won't be the last one."

Monfils made a costly 54 unforced errors and, despite displaying some of the better tennis at times, fell victim to his French foe at the death, where Simon was able to summon some match-turning consistency.

Simon's victory comes shortly after his impressive beating of Andy Murray in Rotterdam just over a week ago, improving his 2015 record to 11-4.

Simon will now look toward next month's Davis Cup fixture, where he is set to lead France against Germany in their first-round encounter.

Day 6 Recap

3 of 8

Men's Semi-finals

Gilles Simon defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky: 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

Gael Monfils defeated Roberto Bautista Agut: 6-4, 6-2

Men's Doubles

Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray defeated Lukas Rosol and Dominic Thiem: 4-6, 6-3, 10-4

Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils set up an all-French final at the 2015 Open 13 in Marseille. The former eventually saw off Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky after dropping the first set.

But just as Monfils had done earlier, Simon used his serve to tip the scales in his favour. He boomed nine aces, according to ATPWorldTour.com. Simon also won a quartet of break points.

Meanwhile, Monfils upset fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut to book his place in the 2015 Open 13 final. Monfils simply blasted Agut off court with a powerful service game. Monfils smashed nine aces to Agut's one, per the ATP official site.

But he also broke the Spaniard's serve four times. The contrasting fortunes on serve are where this match was won.

Monfils even managed to take 22 return points, compared with Agut's 15. That was a reflection of his overall dominance.

Fifth seed Simon may be the slight favourite against seventh-seed Monfils in the final. But the latter was certainly the more impressive during the semi-final stage.

Day 5 Recap

4 of 8

Men's Quarter-Finals

No. 4 Roberto Bautista Agut def. Dominic Thiem: 7-6(7), 6-3

No. 7 Gael Monfils def. Simone Bolelli: 6-4, 6-4

No. 5 Gilles Simon def. Jeremy Chardy: 7-5, 7-6(6)

Sergiy Stakhovsky def. No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka: 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

Men's Doubles

Colin Fleming/Jonathan Marray def. No. 1 Pierre Hugues-Herbert/Nicolas Mahut: Walkover

No. 2 Marin Draganja/Henri Kontinen def. Rameez Junaid/Adil Shamasdin: 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-5

Stanislas Wawrinka was a shock departure from the Open 13 on Friday, beaten in three sets by Ukrainian contender Sergiy Stakhovsky to follow Milon Raonic's exit just a day earlier.

No. 2 Wawrinka would have been hopeful of making his way past the unseeded Stakhovsky, especially after managing a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open, but the 29-year-old fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

The Swiss did assert his presence in the quarter-final tie but Stakhovsky succeeded in saving four of the five break points he faced to hold firm under pressure.

French natives Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon both booked their places in the last four after beating Simone Bolelli and Jeremy Chardy on the fifth day of the tournament, respectively.

Seventh-seeded Monfils won an incredible 90 percent of his first-service points on Friday, per the official ATP Tour website, running to a rudimentary 6-4, 6-4 win over his Italian foe.

Simon was made to work slightly harder for his straight-sets defeat of Chardy, but continued to show strong form after getting the better of Andy Murray in Rotterdam just a week ago.

Joining those three in the final four is Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut, who moves past Dominic Thiem with a 7-6(7), 6-3 win despite suffering his share of scares.

Thiem bettered Agut in aces served, recording seven to his opponent's two, but the Spanish victor was every bit a superior competitor when play opened up.

He will take on Monfils in the semi-finals, leaving Simon to take on Stakhovsky in the hopes that he can avoid the same surprise fate that befell Wawrinka.

Day 4 Recap

5 of 8

Men's Singles: Round 2

Simone Bolelli def. No. 1 Milos Raonic, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6

No. 5 Gilles Simon def. Borna Coric, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3

No. 2 Stan Wawrinka def. Benoit Paire, 6-2, 6-3

Dominic Thiem def. No. 6 David Goffin, 5-1 (retirement)

Jeremy Chardy def. No. 3 Ernests Gulbis, 6-3, 6-4

The Open 13 lost its top seed on Thursday, as No. 1 Milos Raonic fell to Simone Bolelli in three sets. Raonic got off to a poor start, dropping the first set, but he was able to recover and take the second. Bolelli then defeated him in a tiebreaker in the third, ending the top seed's tournament.

For Raonic, it was a case of missed opportunities, as he converted just one of eight break points.

"There were many close games, but I couldn't make the most of my chances," Raonic told The Associated Press, via ESPN. "I served better as the match went on, but he made it through when it mattered the most."

Indeed, Raonic's serve couldn't save him. Despite 21 aces, the top seed simply didn't have his best form on Thursday and disappointingly was ousted.

No. 2 seed Stan Wawrinka had little issues, however, barely breaking a sweat as he dismissed Benoit Paire in straight sets. Wawrinka won 70 percent of his first service points and saved all four break points Paire created.

No. 5 Gilles Simon was the only other seeded player to survive on the day, however, as No. 3 Ernests Gulbis and No. 6 David Goffin also fell on Thursday. That makes Wawrinka and Simon the resounding favorites to win this tournament moving forward.

Day 3 Recap

6 of 8

Men's Singles: Round 1

David Goffin (6) defeats Jerzy Janowicz: 6-4, 6-2

Simone Bolelli defeats Luca Vanni: 6-4, 7-6 (4)

Men's Doubles: Round 1

Andrey Golubev and Denis Istomin defeat Jamie Murray and John Peers (3): 7-5, 6-7 (7), 10-7

Martin Emmrich and Andreas Siljestrom defeat Artem Sitak and Marcus Daniell: 7-6 (0), 6-3

Belgium's David Goffin made quick work of Jerzy Janowicz in the first match of Wednesday's Open 13 action, needing just 75 minutes to advance past the Pole and into the second round.

Goffin surrendered just a single break all match and received a whopping 13 break chances in total, converting four. The defensive specialist dominated in the return game and from the baseline, forcing Janowicz into a plethora of errors.

Not everything went perfect for Goffin, however. Four double faults are cause for concern heading into the next round, and he'll have to improve on that when he meets Dominic Thiem, who shocked Joao Sousa earlier.

Simone Bolelli emerged victorious from an all-Italian affair against Luca Vanni, beating his compatriot in straight sets. The result sets up a rematch with Milos Raonic, who he lost to last week in Rotterdam.

Tournament favourites Gilles Simon and Vasek Pospisil will play later on Wednesday, going up against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Roberto Bautsta Agut, respectively.

Day 2 Recap

7 of 8

Men's Singles First Round

Dominic Thiem defeated Joao Sousa: 7-6(6), 6-4

Andrey Kuznetsov defeated Andrey Golubev: 3-6, 6-4, 6-2

Jeremy Chardy defeated David Guez: 4-6, 6-3 6-2

Men's Doubles First Round

Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski defeated Jonathan Erlich and Mate Pavic: 6-4, 6-3

Swiss player Dominic Thiem saw off Portugal's Joao Sousa to open Day 2 of the 2015 Open 13 in Marseille. In a match that always stayed too close to call, Thiem eventually edged things.

The key was the way he earned three break points from 12, but saved eight from 10, per ProTennisLive.com. His return game was also strong, as Thiem won 17 of 49 points to deflate Sousa.

Elsewhere, Russian Andrey Kuznetsov spotted Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev the first set before overwhelming his outmatched opponent in the next two. Kuznetsov eventually broke down Golubev's strong service game, winning four break points, per ATPWorldTour.com.

The former's own serve stayed strong throughout the match. Kuznetsov smashed 10 aces to break Golubev's resistance.

Day 1 Recap

8 of 8

Men's Singles: Final Qualifying Round

Nicolas Mahut defeats Remi Boutillier: 6-3, 7-5

Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeats Joshua Milton: 6-4, 6-1

David Guez defeats Kenny De Schepper: 6-2, 2-6, 6-3

Alexander Zverev defeats Marsel Ilhan: 6-3, 3-6, 6-1

Men's Singles: First Round

Borna Coric defeats Denis Istomin: 6-4, 7-5

No. 8 Lukas Rosol defeats Sergiy Stakhovsky: 6-3, 6-2

Monday saw the final qualifiers of the Open 13 competition take place, along with a couple of first-round matches.

Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert cruised through to the next stage in qualifying. They had simple matches against the much lower-ranked Remi Boutillier and Joshua Milton, respectively.

But there was a shock in the match between David Guez and Kenny De Schepper, as Guez knocked out his national compatriot.

De Schepper is currently ranked No. 103 in the world and was ranked as high as No. 62 last year, with Guez the inferior player on paper.

But Guez powered through the final set to eliminate De Schepper and take his place in the first round.

Importantly, Guez won 76 percent of his first-serve points, per ATPWorldTour.com, despite having a lower first-serve percentage than his opponent.

In the main-draw action, both matches were straight-sets victories and involved little stress. Borna Coric outdid Denis Istomin to triumph 6-4, 7-5. Despite Sergiy Stakhovsky's notable history of taking down Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, he managed just five total games in a loss to Lukas Rosol.

Tuesday's action will see a number of French natives take the court in Marseille. Mahut will be playing again, in addition to Jeremy Chardy and the ever-entertaining Gael Monfils. The home crowd should be rallying in support as the nation's notable names hope to advance.
