Robert Griffin III, Wife Announce They're Expecting 1st Child on Twitter

Adam WellsFeb 13, 2015

There are times when Robert Griffin III draws the ire of Washington fans for how he uses Twitter, but there should be no debate about the birthday moment he shared with the world on social media Thursday.

The 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year posted a picture of him and his wife's belly on Twitter, indicating the couple were expecting their first child, with the hashtag asking if it would be a boy or girl:

You would be hard-pressed to find a player who has been more scrutinized for his on-field performance over the last 12 months than Griffin. Certainly, he hasn't lived up to the hype after that tremendous debut season in 2013.

All you have to do is look back earlier this week to see what social media does to Griffin. He got into it with a fan on Instagram after he posted a video of himself singing a Michael Jackson song. Per John Keim's report for ESPN, the fan told Griffin to "act like a QB," which prompted this response:

"If giving back to the community and training for football at the same time is frowned upon.....then what would you say I do Sir? Not give back or Train? Honest Question...Oh wait...and should I not enjoy a classic song with others who Love MJ? I'm just asking for your wisdom here."

Who knows if Griffin will have a long career as an NFL quarterback? Based on that one particular fan's opinion, it doesn't sound like it. That's a concern for another day. This moment with a man and his wife is a time to be cherished. There's certainly life beyond football for everyone, whether it happens tomorrow or in 10 years.

There will be plenty of time to think about what Griffin's role in Washington will be. He's got a lot of questions to answer, but it's nice to have a perspective on things. Griffin's life is going to change in amazing ways that he never thought possible as soon as his baby is born.
