Tiger Woods' Statement Reveals Very Little

Michael FitzpatrickFeb 12, 2015

Tiger Woods may be the most talented politician in America today.

The moment Woods was carted off the golf course last Thursday at Torrey Pines, the wheels of speculation began to turn.

Will Woods attend the Masters?

Will Woods play again this season?

Will Woods ever be healthy again?

Forget Jack, will Woods even break Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins?

So what did Woods do to address all of the wild speculation floating around the airwaves 24/7?

He released a statement through his website.

Only this was no ordinary statement.

Woods managed to release a 200-word statement just before 6 p.m. ET on February 11 without really saying anything.

The statement reads as follows:

"

The last two weeks have been very disappointing to me, especially Torrey, because I never want to withdraw. Unfortunately, lately injuries have made that happen too often.

This latest injury is not related to my previous surgery. I am having daily physical therapy and I am feeling better every day.

Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me. My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I've said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I'm ready, I'll be back. Next week I will practice at Medalist and at home getting ready for the rest of the year. I am committed to getting back to the pinnacle of my game. I'd like to play The Honda Classicit's a tournament in my hometown and it's important to mebut I won't be there unless my game is tournament-ready. That's not fair to anyone. I do, however, expect to be playing again very soon.

I want to thank the fans in Phoenix and San Diego. They were amazing. I greatly appreciate everyone's support.

"

Let’s break this down and attempt to figure out exactly what it is we have learned.

"The last two weeks have been very disappointing to me, especially Torrey."

So Woods’ last two appearances, which resulted in a last-place finish at Phoenix and a WD after 11 holes at Torrey Pines, were disappointing.

Umm, no kidding.

"I never want to withdraw. Unfortunately, lately injuries have made that happen too often."

Well yeah, most golfers would think that just nine official PGA Tour starts in 14 months, including two WDs in their past five events, would constitute a situation where injuries are occurring a bit too often.

"This latest injury is not related to my previous surgery. I am having daily physical therapy and I am feeling better every day."

We’ve all heard that one before. Amazingly, virtually every time Woods steps onto the golf course he manages to injure his back in a way that he proclaims is not related to his April 2014 microdiscectomy surgery…boy, that is a lot of injuries to one back that are in no way related to one another.

"Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me. My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf."

Would two last-place finishes and a WD in three events be an acceptable performance for any professional golfer?

"

I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I'm ready, I'll be back. Next week I will practice at Medalist and at home getting ready for the rest of the year. I am committed to getting back to the pinnacle of my game. I'd like to play The Honda Classic -- it's a tournament in my hometown and it's important to me -- but I won't be there unless my game is tournament-ready. That's not fair to anyone. I do, however, expect to be playing again very soon.

"

So Woods would like to play the Honda Classic, but he may not and hasn't really decided when he will return to professional golf.

Just to recap:

  • Woods is not happy with his recent performance on the golf course.
  • He has told us that he is getting injured too often.
  • He is claiming that this back injury is once again somehow not related to his surgery.
  • He needs to practice
  • He wants to play the Honda Classic but he is not sure if he will attend that event or exactly when he will return to the PGA Tour.

Essentially we know nothing more today than we did prior to Woods’ statement.

Presidential candidates are probably scrambling to hire Woods (or whoever Woods employs as his speechwriter) for their 2016 campaigns.

Releasing a statement designed to get the media off your back and stop the wheels of speculation from turning, all while managing to say absolutely nothing?

Ingenious!

Just another day in the soap opera that has become Woods’ career.

Be sure to stay tuned for next episode of As Tiger’s World Turns.
