Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Arguably the best wide receiver in the 2015 class is Alabama Crimson Tide standout Amari Cooper. After racking up 124 receptions for 1,727 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, it is clear he has the talent to translate to the next level.
The 6’1”, 210-pound Cooper is not the prototypical boisterous receiver, as he instead lets his play on the field do the talking. He may not be the biggest or fastest pass-catcher in the draft, but his physicality should make him a dangerous red-zone threat.
When asked about Cooper and a player he thought was comparable, former general manager Phil Savage told NFL.com, “Amari is super athletic, very fluid and highly skilled as a route-runner and hands-catcher. Because of his reserved demeanor and similar ability, I compared him to Marvin Harrison during the season.”
There were areas of inconsistency completing routes and dropping passes during his college career, but Cooper’s numbers indicate that he made the big plays when needed. He was also a big part of Alabama’s overall success in 2014.
The ideal landing spot would be the Oakland Raiders at No. 4 overall. With Derek Carr as the quarterback of the future and a talented core of young players, adding Cooper in the first round would give the offense a reliable weapon on the outside.
Predicted Landing Spot: Oakland Raiders at No. 4 Overall
Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
While Cooper may be stealing many of the offseason headlines, West Virginia Mountaineers wide receiver Kevin White has been climbing up draft boards leading up to the NFL Scouting Combine.
White’s numbers were impressive in 2014. He managed to amass 109 receptions for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he added nine games in which he racked up at least 100 receiving yards.
In his breakdown of White, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com shared the wide receiver’s strengths but revealed the one tangible that could hurt him on draft day.
"He's not just a product of West Virginia's system—he's talented," Zierlein wrote. "White competes hard for the ball and has the leaping, hands and high-pointing ability to be a factor down the field despite his lack of top-end speed. His improvement from 2013 to 2014 is a great sign, but his 40 time could define his draft stock."
At 6’3” and 210 pounds, White has the size NFL teams are looking for in the first round. He also has the physicality to fight for extra yards, but he has not faced much press coverage. Before he can be a star in the NFL, though, he will have to show that he can break loose from defenders off the line of scrimmage.
Just like Cooper, White won’t blow many defenders away with his speed, but he knows how to catch the football at its highest point. His physicality and size make him a dangerous weapon, and his draft stock could climb with a standout performance at the combine.
One team that could use a No. 2 wide receiver is the New York Giants. With Odell Beckham Jr. taking the role as the No. 1, the Giants would give White more room to shine on the opposite side of the field.
Predicted Landing Spot: New York Giants at No. 9 Overall
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma; DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
Cooper and White are likely the first two wide receivers to be selected in the 2015 NFL draft, but the battle to be taken third will be intense. It comes down to either Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham or Louisville’s DeVante Parker.
Green-Beckham is one of the most physically gifted athletes in this year’s draft class. At 6’6” and 225 pounds, he also has the strength and the speed to match his raw physical attributes. However, there are off-field issues.
After being kicked off Missouri’s football team, Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma but missed the entire season. There is no doubting his raw ability and high upside, but the issues off the field will be a major issue in today’s NFL.
On the other hand, Parker has elite size at 6’3” and 211 pounds, but he has plenty of room left for development in terms of running routes. There may be an initial struggle moving to the NFL, but he has a high upside and elite ball-catching abilities.
Both of these players have the talent and upside to be the third receiver selected in the first round, but it will come down to whether the risk associated with Green-Beckham outweighs the lower ceiling for Parker.
Despite the recent history with receiver Josh Gordon, the Cleveland Browns would understand how to help a player like Green-Beckham mature into a top NFL player. Another team that needs a receiver is the Miami Dolphins, and Parker could be a perfect fit.
Predicted Landing Spot for Green-Beckham: Cleveland Browns at No. 12 Overall
Predicted Landing Spot for Parker: Miami Dolphins at No. 14 Overall
