Pittsburgh Steelers: Is Frank Summers The Next Hines Ward?

Nick SignorelliAug 13, 2009

I know that most people reading this are thinking right now, Nick must have had too much Iron City during his first game back in Pittsburgh.

Frank Summers out weighs Hines Ward by at least 30 pounds.ย  Hines Ward is a receiver while Summers is a running back.ย  Hines Ward is a Super Bowl MVP and Summers hardly played the fourth quarter in the preseason game.

But still, there is a glaring similarity.

If you look at Hines Wards rookie season, and in his first few years, he was a special teams stand out.

There was one play in the game, early in the third quarter, the Steelers punted the ball, Frank "The Tank" Summers made a tackle, that reminded me of a young Hines Ward.

I know that it is hard to judge a career, especially from the first preseason game, but I think what Summers showed, was Steelers mentality.

Similar to that of Ward. Who is willing to put his own body on the line, for the love of the game, Summers seems to like to hit.

And that is exactly what Mike Tomlin is looking for.

Ward became successful as a Steeler because he earned his spot on the Steelers with his special teams play.ย  And that is exactly what Summers seems to be doing.

Summers will likely make the Steelers as a special teams monster. And that could open the door to greater things in the future.

It worked for Ward.
