Chelsea Transfer News: Thibaut Courtois Linked to Real Madrid in Latest Rumours

Nick AkermanFeb 9, 2015

Real Madrid are targeting Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois "as an alternative should they miss out on Manchester United's David de Gea," according to Jonathan Green of the Daily Star.

The Belgium stopper has been in fine form for the Blues this season and is famed for his three-year loan spell with Atletico Madrid. Courtois became a thorn in Los Blancos' side in La Liga, highlighted by his form during Atletico's memorable run to the title last term.

Speculation continues to link Madrid with De Gea, but suggestions the Red Devils 'keeper is in talks about inking a new contract at Old Trafford have seen Real's attention turn elsewhere.

"I am negotiating with Manchester United about De Gea's renewal," said his agent, Jorge Mendes, in an interview with Cadena Ser (h/t Rajvir Rai of the MailOnline). "It is not true that De Gea has found a deal with Real Madrid. I'm negotiating with Manchester United his extension."

This could leave president Florentino Perez looking to splash his cash on another target. Courtois is proven in Spain and continues to develop at a rapid pace. Like De Gea, the 22-year-old is a regular winner of points for his club, and he has been a vital ingredient in Chelsea's assault on the Premier League crown.

Although Jose Mourinho still has the veteran talents of Petr Cech to call on, it's unlikely he will let Courtois leave. Chelsea supporters waited years for the youngster to receive his opportunity in the first team and won't want to see his promising future moved away from Stamford Bridge.

Courtois is very much a talent for the here and now, someone who can enjoy a decade-long tenure between the sticks for Chelsea. Real Madrid's reported interest is easy to dismiss at first glance, but Courtois' future could soon come under the microscope if De Gea signs a new contract at Old Trafford.

The duo represent arguably the best two young 'keepers in the world, meaning they would be ideal replacements for the mistake-prone Iker Casillas.
