Real Madrid Fans Protest Ronaldo's Birthday Karaoke Party with Banner

Mark PattersonFeb 8, 2015

Jorge Mendes has defended Cristiano Ronaldo's big 30th birthday party in Madrid on Saturday night, which has been a big talking point in the Spanish capital after Real Madrid lost 4-0 to city rivals Atletico earlier in the day.

Ronaldo was pictured singing on stage with Colombian musician Kevin Roldan and appeared in plenty of photographs on social media, which caused a reaction from disappointed fans.

Ronaldo's agent insisted that the Portugal forward was "angry" about the defeat, but given the number of people who had travelled and the fact there were more than 40 children in attendance, "he wanted to respect the people who had come."

In quotes picked up by AS, Mendes said:

"

He was very angry, devastated with the situation. Cristiano is still the best professional in the world, the best ever. He told me 'I’m not going to stay for very long,' but he had more than 40 children at the party and had to go. Cristiano didn’t want to have the party on the 5th (the day of his birthday) because he couldn’t. He wanted to respect the people who had come. It was also his niece’s birthday. He was very angry about the defeat.

"

According to The Independent, the Roldan song also struck a controversial note because it featured suggestive lyrics.

Mendes, again via AS, took aim at Roldan for the footage emerging from the event:

"

It is unacceptable for anyone to take advantage of the situation. You do not have the right to filter images. I have not spoken to anyone, I do not know them but what you cannot do is take images from a private event. The people spent the first two hours encouraging [Cristiano]. He was absorbed.

"

Real Madrid remain top of La Liga despite the defeat, although Barcelona have now closed to within a point. The club are next in action on Saturday against Deportivo La Coruna.

Update: February 9

The row over Ronaldo's birthday continues to rumble on. On Monday, a group of fans held up a banner outside of Real Madrid's training ground which read, as per Goal.com:  "Your laughter, our shame".
