Texas A&M Football: 4 Redshirts with Best Chance to Earn Starting Spot in 2015

Michael TaglientiFeb 10, 2015

The Texas A&M football team will compete for an SEC title in the 2015 season. If the Aggies want to win the SEC, they are going to need a number of players who redshirted in 2014 to step in and contribute as starters in the fall.

The eligibility clock on college athletes has been sped up. As time goes on, college football players are expected to contribute earlier and earlier in their careers. At one time, freshmen could expect to redshirt their first year on campus and contribute on the field as juniors and seniors.

Now some freshmen are expected to contribute on the field right away. There were 21 recruits in the Aggies' 2014 signing class and 12 of them played as true freshmen.

This is a look at which players who redshirted this past season will compete for starting positions in 2015.

OG Jermaine Eluemunor

1 of 4

Jermaine Eluemunor was a junior college transfer who redshirted during the 2014 season. The Aggie coaches had adequate depth on the offensive line, so they gave Eluemunor the opportunity to take a year to adjust to the college game.

Eluemunor was the No. 1 ranked junior college offensive tackle in the country when he was coming out of Lackawanna Community College. The Aggies have starting spots available on the offensive line at left guard and left tackle.

Germain Ifedi started at right tackle in 2014. If Ifedi remains at right tackle in 2014, expect Eluemunor to start at left guard. If Ifedi starts at left tackle, do not be surprised to see Eluemunor get a serious look at right tackle.

OT Avery Gennesy

2 of 4

Avery Gennesy is a 6'5", 310-pound offensive tackle who came to A&M from Southaven Junior College. He was ranked as a 4-star linemen coming out of junior college by 247Sports

Gennesy has great feet and is expected to compete for the starting position at left tackle in 2015. With Cedric Ogbuehi moving on to the NFL, Gennesy is expected to be the next in line of great left tackles at A&M.

He redshirted in 2014 along with Eluemunor, so the Aggies could have the left side of their offensive line solidified for the next two seasons. The offensive line is a fluid situation right now with new offensive line coach Dave Christensen now on the staff.

It remains to be seen how Christensen wants to build his offensive line. Aggie fans should expect to see Gennesy end up at left tackle and Eluemunor at left guard.

OT Koda Martin

3 of 4

Koda Martin is an interesting prospect for the Aggies. The 6'6", 290-pound athlete will play on the offensive line or at tight end for the Aggies in 2015.

The 3-star athlete was recruited by some programs as a defensive end and tight end out of high school. The Aggies recruited him with the intent of making him into a left tackle on the offensive line.

With the graduation of Ben Compton, the Aggies will be looking for an athlete who can fit into the role of a blocking tight end and H-back. Martin may be utilized in that role in 2015, or he may end up as a starter on the offensive line.

It all depends on how much new offensive line coach Dave Christensen likes him, and whether freshman tight end Jordan Davis is an effective blocker. With his size and athleticism, Aggie fans should expect to see Martin used somewhere on the field in 2015.

NG DeShawn Washington

4 of 4

The nose guard position is going to be one to watch at A&M in 2015. Suddenly the Aggies have a lot of depth on the defensive line.

Hardreck Walker started at nose guard in 2014. Zaycoven Henderson and incoming freshman Daylon Mack are expected to get a lot of playing time at the position in 2015.

DeShawn Washington will fit somewhere in that rotation. The 6'3", 290-pound defensive tackle was listed as a 3-star prospect by 247Sports coming out of Nederland High School.

He redshirted during the 2014 season to add some size and strength. Washington will be in the defensive line rotation at defensive tackle and nose guard. Expect him to compete for the starting spot at nose guard in the fall.
