Defense Attorney: "Trial is a Huge Risk"

Sunday, Feb. 8

According to The Charlotte Observer's Michael Gordon, Hardy will appeal last July's conviction, which saw a judge come to a guilty verdict after a 10-hour trial in domestic violence court. The charges are misdemeanor ones.

This time, Hardy, who was arrested in May after allegedly assaulting then-girlfriend Nicole Holder, will make his case to a group of 12 jurors. The process of finding the necessary unbiased individuals could take a "better part of a week," according to retired judge Richard Boner, via Gordon.

Once that process begins, Hardy can't drop his appeal.

“Careerwise and for his future, this trial is a huge risk,” Charlotte defense attorney Claire Rauscher told Gordon.

Hardy played just one game this season before being placed on the exempt/commissioner's permission list during a time in which the NFL was under heavy scrutiny for its treatment of domestic abuse cases. According to sources cited by The Charlotte Observer's Joseph Person, the team is not expected to bring back the 26-year-old.

“It’s foolish to think that someone won’t (sign Hardy), assuming a not-guilty verdict,” former Panthers general manager Bill Polian told Person. “But it’s also foolish to think there won’t be ramifications to it.”

In 63 career games, Hardy has recorded 34 sacks. He tallied a career-high 15.0 in 2013, earning a second-team All-Pro nod and a Pro Bowl selection.
