WWE Fastlane, Roman Reigns, WWE Divas and More from the Babyface Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaFeb 5, 2015

WWE admitted it has a kayfabe controversy on its hands. Reigns shouldn't have won the Royal Rumble; The Rock interfered. The Rock is no longer a real WWE Superstar (wink, wink).

In admitting to a kayfabe controversy, however, WWE is avoiding a real one.

"

@ThisIsNasty is there any outcome to the Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan match at WWE Fastlane where both fanbases are happy?

This is the goal of Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns' Fastlane match, with WWE addressing fan outrage in the ring. Reigns has much less room for error than Bryan, but these two should be able to have a strong match. Fans are still looking for every minute, GIF-friendly slip-up from Reigns to use against him.

A good wrestling match against Bryan will silence many critics.

If the match is incredible, problem solved. Even if Reigns wins, a post-match handshake is Bryan's way of telling the "Yes!" Movement to accept Reigns.

If rumors of a Bryan match against Dolph Ziggler are true, interference by Ziggler will set up an Internet-friendly feud while keeping Reigns in the main event. Reigns would have to chase off Ziggler to absolve himself of any affiliation, but this finish kills two birds with one stone.

WWE is on the right track in allowing Bryan and Reigns to settle the Royal Rumble controversy against one another. With the support Reigns still has from live crowds, fans will accept him even more if he wins.

"

@ThisIsNasty Reigns seemed pretty over on Monday, did WWE change track to quickly with the insertion of Bryan into the storyline?

— not in these pants (@ZUWANATION) February 5, 2015"

I think Reigns is over because WWE changed track. According to this week's report of the SmackDown tapings, per Rob Kiess of PWTorch, Reigns continues to receive strong cheers.

There's sympathy there. Bryan's base feels it's unfair for him to be on the outside of a WrestleMania event looking in. But Reigns has a base, too, and it feels the same way about him losing his WrestleMania spot because of Twitter.

WWE is masterfully positioning Reigns as a valiant, vigilante fighting babyface. His ongoing side feud with The Authority is also helping him.

Bryan's loud, passionate supporters in hot cities like Philadelphia make it easy to forget about Reigns' mainstream support elsewhere.

The "Yes!" Movement isn't going anywhere, but nether are fans of Reigns—or whatever WWE Creative ends up calling them.

"

@ThisIsNasty with talents like @MsCharlotteWWE and @SashaBanksWWE moving up, should @wwe bring back the Women's Championship?

— WWE Front Row (@WWEFrontRow) February 5, 2015"

WWE has a groundswell of talent in NXT waiting to rewrite history in women's wrestling. The thought of another championship will dilute a division that already struggles for TV time. In fact, the NXT Women's Championship is the other championship.

The only case for a second women's championship on the main roster is if the Divas had their own hour of live programming. This isn't happening anytime soon.

The fewer championships in any wrestling promotion, the better. Continuing to add titles naturally reduces the meaning of winning them in general. Once upon a time, winning any championship was enough to add momentum to a career.

These days, most title matches are just feuds over luggage.
