Super Bowl Ads 2015: Highlighting Best Commercials During Patriots vs. Seahawks

James DudkoFeb 2, 2015

This year's Super Bowl commercial list put plenty of former and current players in front of the camera. It also saw Coca-Cola try to cure the hate so often spewed forth online. There was even room for Lindsay Lohan to get back into the spotlight, as more than one celebrity proved willing to laugh at themselves.

But did any of these leave an impression lasting enough to be considered among the best commercials of the night? Some did, and here are a few more.

Dodge Celebrates Triple Digits

Using a series of people who've reached the 100-year age milestone to describe the merits of a car proved to be a strange yet very effective mix.

This Dodge ad began with a collection of triple-digit seniors extolling some of life's lessons. It all started as somber stuff, featuring many of the platitudes most younger folks probably roll their eyes at upon hearing.

Then, just as suddenly, the pace quickened. Every senior began rasping a series of acerbic and defiant slogans, each embodying the swagger, bravado and anti-establishment individualism Dodge wants you to believe everyone who drives their cars possesses.

The tagline "Here's to the Next 100" brilliantly brought this dichotomy of pace and style to a close.

Mindy Kaling and Matt Damon

Mindy Kaling's day of taking advantage of being ignored, provided the backdrop for Nationwide's jaunty commercial. Mindy thinking nobody notices her until the seemingly-always-ready-to-laugh-at-himself Matt Damon does was a good way to cap this breezy spot.

If there's one gripe, it's that it wasn't entirely clear what the whole thing had to do with insurance.

Jeff Bridges goes Random for Squarespace

Speaking of not quite getting it, does anyone really know for sure what was going on during the Jeff Bridges-led Squarespace spot? It turns out the purpose was to let you know all about DreamingWithJeff.com, or at least the fact the site was built with Squarespace.

Apparently, Bridges needed to play a Tibetan singing bowl to let you know that, according to Ian Crouch of The New Yorker. OK...

This commercial was a reminder that being obscure and a little out there can sometimes be better than getting straight to the point. Admit it, aren't you curious to find out for yourself exactly what all this was about?

Best of the Rest

One of the more popular offerings of the night was the Danny Trejo-led re-imaging of The Brady Bunch by Snickers. Utilizing one of cinema's scariest bad men to bring some violent intent to the Brady cocoon of innocence was inspired.

Forbes writer Erik Kain, who was generally unimpressed with this year's commercial reel, saw this as a rare highlight: "For a brief moment, it was as if I were watching a Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez collaborative take on the Brady Bunch. And that made the whole thing worth it."

Of course, it also helped that Steve Buscemi popped up to round things off.

Finally, continuing the theme of film and television personalities taking shots at themselves, Pierce Brosnan's Kia spot was at least mildly amusing. The whole concept hinged on him playing to his stereotype as a type-cast action genre actor, created from his days playing James Bond.

Brosnan just can't seem to let go of that persona or think about a script any other way during this pithy riff on the staples of action cinema.

The best commercials of this year's Super Bowl were those that stayed tongue firmly in cheek. The most entertaining spots had a mischievous or downright irreverent tone and idea like the ones on this list.
