Michael GibbonsAug 12, 2009

Is the best receiver in town playing the wrong sport? Tonight we may get an answer to this question.

Back in 2007 when Jeff Samardzija delcared that he would not be entering the NFL and be putting all of his attention into baseball it raised a lot of eyebrows.

Jeff Samardzija is the all-time receiving leader at Norte Dame. surpassing players the likes of Tim Brown. At 6'5, 220 lbs, Jeff was considered a possible first round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Several teams were interested in him including his home town team, Da Bears

So far Jeff's career in baseball has been a mixed bag. Jeff spent the entire 2007 season down in the minors, spliting time between single and double A. He went 3-8 with a 4.95 ERA while in Single A and then after being promoted Double A he went 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA.

In 2008 Jeff started the season in Double A and posted a record of 3-5 with a 4.86 ERA. In June he was moved up to Triple A and went 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA before being called up to join the big club in July. Jeff remained in Chicago for the rest of the season going 1-0 with a 2.28 ERA.

This season Jeff failed to break camp with the big club and was sent down to Triple A. So far Jeff has made the trip between Chicago and Iowa a couple times this season and currently this season he is 1-1 and a 6.29 ERA.

But it all changes tonight. Tonight Jeff gets to back his first start in the majors. And with this start we will get answers. Does Jeff have enough pitchers to make it as a starter?
