The ecstasy was short-lived, though, as James Rodriguez equalised for the hosts just moments later for his seventh league goal of the season. 

Sergio Ramos pounced on a rebound to give Madrid a 2-1 advantage.

Gareth Bale had a golden opportunity to further Madrid's  lead late in the second half, but the Welshman couldn't hit the target with an open net. 

Karim Benzema extended Real Madrid's lead to 3-1, excellently finishing a neat pass from Bale. 

Benzema bagged his brace for the day, scoring a beautiful strike to make it 4-1 for the hosts.
