Breaking Down No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 6 Andy Murray

There are several men’s tennis players who have become staples of the championship matchups in major tournaments, and two of those giants will go head-to-head Sunday morning for the Australian Open title.

For Djokovic, the road to the final was exactly what he expected. In the first two rounds, he managed to beat both Aljaz Bedene and Andrey Kuznetsov in straight sets before playing his first ranked challenger in the third round.

While No. 31 seed Fernando Verdasco provided a tough test in the first set, Djokovic managed to hold and avoided dropping a set once again. He went on to beat Gilles Muller in the fourth round and took on No. 8 seed Milos Raonic in the quarterfinals, successfully making it through five rounds without dropping a set.

That wasn’t the case against Stan Wawrinka, as the two men engaged in a five-set battle that Djokovic eventually managed to win, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Despite the victory, tennis insider Carole Bouchard revealed Djokovic’s disappointment in his overall performance:

Now Djokovic turns his attention to Murray. When asked about his familiarity with the No. 6 seed, Djokovic told ATPWorldTour.com, “Andy and I go back to when we were 12 years old. We know each other for a long time. It’s nice to see we’re playing another Grand Slam final against each other. We’ve played many, and hopefully we can come up with a big match for all of you guys.”

Murray’s road to the final was not as difficult as most projected. After beating Yuki Bhambri, Marinko Matosevic and Joao Sousa in the first three rounds respectively, he managed to pull off a hard-fought win over No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov.

The quarterfinals had Murray stopping the run of red-hot Aussie Nick Kyrgios, but one of the best matches of the tournament was the battle against No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych. The two men were confrontational and the four-set match was very entertaining.

The hope is that the battle between Djokovic and Murray is as entertaining as their semifinals matchups, as each man endured a fierce game. Murray must overcome his notoriously slow starts to stop the hard-hitting Djokovic.

Djokovic can cover more area than Murray, but the power for each man is very similar. With the accuracy of Murray on the return and Djokovic’s dangerous serve, this battle is destined to be a five-set instant classic.

Prediction: Djokovic def. Murray, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3
