We Remember: 15th Anniversary of Titans Coming Up 1 Yard Short vs. Rams

Kyle NewportJan 30, 2015

Of all of the crazy Super Bowls there have been, none had a more dramatic finish than Super Bowl XXXIV between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans. The two franchises played that classic game 15 years ago today.

The Titans rallied from a 16-0 deficit to tie the score at 16-16 with two minutes, 12 seconds remaining. However, St. Louis responded quickly with a 73-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to Isaac Bruce. With a Super Bowl on the line, Tennessee needed to go 88 yards in just less than two minutes.

The Titans got 87.

With quarterback Steve McNair leading the way, the Titans managed to get to the Rams' 10-yard line with five seconds left. That gave them time for one final play to try to score the game-tying touchdown.

McNair completed his final pass of the game to Kevin Dyson, who did what he could to try to get the ball across the goal line. However, St. Louis linebacker Mike Jones was able to bring Dyson down one yard short of the end zone.

With that, the Rams were champions, and the Titans had to deal with a heartbreaking loss.

Dyson recently reflected on the play, via the Titans' official website:

"

I thought the football had potentially crossed the plane. When I finally hit the ground I just tried to get the extra lunge, hoping the officials would take the time to review it and see if the ball crossed the plane. But obviously when the confetti came down, there was a sense of disbelief that the game was actually over.

"

Dyson stretching for the end zone has gone down as one of the most memorable moments in NFL history.

Unfortunately for the receiver and the Titans, the stretch came up just a little bit short.
