Australian Open 2015: Twitter Reacts to Day 12 Bracket Results, Scores, Winners
There was only one singles match on the Day 12 slate at the 2015 Australian Open. It still provided more than enough drama for the fans at Melbourne Park as world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and reigning champion Stan Wawrinka battled for five sets before the top seed advanced.
Djokovic moves on to Sunday's final where he will meet fellow "Big Four" star Andy Murray. Both players entered the tournament with question marks. The Serb had an illness that limited his practice time while the Scot was still searching for top form after some injury woes.
Those issues are now firmly in the rear-view mirror as they get prepared to face off for the season's first Grand Slam title. Before they do, let's check out how Djokovic earned his spot in the championship match along with some reaction.
Day 12 Singles Results
| Semifinal | (1) Novak Djokovic | (4) Stan Wawrinka | 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 |
Day 12 Recap and Reaction
Friday's clash marked the third straight year Djokovic and Wawrinka met in Australia. Each of the previous two went five sets. Last year's meeting was the first time since 2006 that Wawrinka won a match between the two, and it helped propel him to his first major title.
It didn't take long to see they were probably in for another extended battle. Although it took some time for both players to find a rhythm, the first set ended up in a tiebreak. Djokovic was finally able to elevate his game to grab early control.
Bleacher Report's Dan Levy, who joked the Serbian sensation is a tennis-playing robot, highlighted his improved play late in the set:
Wawrinka got back level by securing the only break of the second set. It was also an impressive stretch of serving by the Swiss star, who had three aces in the set as compared to none for Djokovic while also winning 83 percent of points on his first serve.
Djokovic fought back to win the third set. Perhaps the most entertaining aspect came after it was over as he had secured the break to make it 6-4 but didn't know the set was over. Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times highlighted the weird, yet funny, moment:
Unsurprisingly, Wawrinka struck right back in the fourth to level the match once again. He found a comfort level, especially off the backhand wing, in the set and when that happens he's capable of beating anybody. Craig O'Shannessy of the ATP World Tour spotlighted the terrific hitting:
So just when the match was seemingly even and it appeared they may be in for another long fifth set, something unexpected happened. The defending champion's form dropped just a bit and in the blink of an eye the match was over.
Djokovic scored the bagel in the deciding set to advance to the final. Still, as Kevin Negandhi of ESPN noted, the match as a whole didn't disappoint:
"3rd straight year Djokovic and Wawrinka are in a 5 setter in the Aussie Open.. they have not disappointed us this morning..
— Kevin Negandhi (@KNegandhiESPN) January 30, 2015"
Afterward, the tournament passed along comments from the No. 1 seed about the turning point early in the last set:
ESPN Tennis stated the victory also allowed him to tie an event record:
"With 7-6(1) 3-6 6-4 4-6 6-0 win over Wawrinka, top seed Djokovic is now tied w/Edberg & Federer for most #AusOpen final appearances at 5.
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 30, 2015"
And finally, Howard Bryant of ESPN looked ahead to the final:
First the women's tournament will come to a close on Saturday. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, the top two seeds, will battle on Rod Laver Arena. Williams has won 15 straight over her Russian counterpart and should be considered the favorite once again.
Djokovic and Murray follow on Sunday to end the season's first major. Even though Murray has for the most part exceeded expectations in the event, he'll need to elevate his level of play in order to win his first Aussie Open title in his fourth final appearance.
Regardless of which players come out on top, the tournament has produced two intriguing championship matches that should jump-start a memorable 2015 Grand Slam season.
