Borussia Dortmund announced Reus has signed a new deal through 2019.

Bayern Munich Reportedly Rule Out Reus Signing

Saturday, Jan. 30

Bayern Munich have ruled out the prospect of signing Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus, according to reports.

The future of the German international—who was a reported target for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, per Bruce Archer of the Daily Star—remained a hot topic in the final embers of the January transfer window.

Newspaper Bild—in German—claimed Bayern would not be in the running for his signature. German football expert Jan Aage Fjortoft confirmed the report in English on Twitter:

Before reaching a contract extension, Reus was likely poised to leave the Ruhr club at the end of the season amid interest from a host of illustrious names on the continent.

Sport Witness believed there could have been other motives behind the German champions leaking that they were not interested:

Real Madrid also strong interest, per Archer.

Dortmund chief-executive Hans-Joachim Watzke never gave up hope of keeping hold of their prize asset, despite the club’s predicament at the foot of the Bundesliga. According to Watzke, the signing of Kevin Kampl from Red Bull Salzburg was no contingency plan and was hoping all along that Reus’ ties to the city would keep him from moving on.

“I still believe we have a chance of keeping Marco in his hometown”, said Watzke to SZ (h/t Joe Wright of Goal.com. “Such interpretations don't interest me (regarding Kampl replacing Reus). I would like to see both of them together this season for Dortmund. I hope to”.

Watzke hasn't given up hope of keeping Reus.

As romantic a notion it would be to see Reus decline the advances of European football juggernauts to remain with his hometown club, it may be a major surprise for many that he decided to stick around at the Westfalenstadion beyond this season. Dortmund are a club that are in real trouble at the moment and with Champions League football looking unlikely for next season, they’re at risk of losing a host of star men.

Still, it’s encouraging for German football fans that Reus is currently here to stay.
