Super Bowl 2015 Tickets: Latest Price Details and Reaction

Timothy RappJan 29, 2015

For many football fans, the ultimate dream is getting to attend the Super Bowl. After seeing the prices of tickets for this year's game, however, those same fans will probably feel pretty content with their Super Bowl parties at home.

As Darren Rovell of ESPN.com reported, the prices for Super Bowl XLIX are astronomical, with the cheapest ticket on the secondary market currently going for $8,070. That could make this year's game the most expensive in history. As Rovell explains, the rise in price is due to the resale market being in flux between ticket brokers and resale sites:

"

In order to "short" the market, a broker typically lists tickets in a generic section of the stadium and doesn't disclose exactly where the seats are until the Wednesday before the game, when sites such as StubHub and Vivid Seats require the brokers to choose exact seat locations or cancel the sale.

The idea for the brokers is to take money from ticket buyers when the tickets are at a higher price after the conference title games, then actually buy the tickets days later as the prices start to come down. The ease of the scheme caused more and more brokers to get in the game.

A ticket broker spoke to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports about the market for tickets, and he said, "I think the get-in number by [Thursday] is going to get near $7,000. This market is ready to go nuts. Like, real nuts. Like you've never seen before."

The problem this year is that the supply of tickets is less than in years past, meaning the brokers are paying higher prices for each ticket (and facing possible losses on the sales). Furthermore, sites like StubHub have started buying tickets directly to assure they actually have the tickets in place for their customers' orders, and the price for consumers has gone up, per Rovell.

In other words, fans who hoped that prices would go down as the big game neared will likely be sorely disappointed this year, as all indications are that prices will continue rising.

Enjoy watching the game on your television with your family and friends from the comforts of home.
