Breaking Down Idina Menzel
There is no shortage of talented performers that could take the ball and run with it, but Idina Menzel has the mainstream clout, popularity and singing ability to produce one of the best renditions in years.
While it will be hard to top Whitney Houston’s 1991 performance, there is almost no doubt she will top Christina Aguilera’s failure in 2011.
| How long will it take Idina Menzel to sing the national anthem? | Over/Under: 2 minutes, 1 second |
| Will Idina Menzel forget or omit at least one word of the national anthem? | Yes +400 (4-1); No -600 (1-6) |
For those unfamiliar with Menzel, the 43-year-old Broadway star has been in the business since 1996. She was a major star in the production of Rent and the movie adaptation of the play, but it has been her role on the television show Glee that has helped her resurrect her career.
Not only was she one of the biggest stars in the animated movie Enchanted, but she also stole the show as part of the very popular children’s movie Frozen. Her main song from the movie reached the fifth spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
When asked about how it felt to be asked to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl, Menzel spoke candidly to Ed Masley of The Republic (via AZCentral.com):
"Oh God (laughs). It felt incredible. I've always had a really fond place in my heart for, specifically, the Whitney Houston national anthem. Ever since I was a little kid, I always remembered that and how beautiful it was and kind of dreamt that one day I could be at the point in my career where I'd be asked to do that.
"
While most think Menzel should be fine, Milo Yiannopoulos of BreitBart.com is not so sure:
"Idina Menzel is going to bomb so hard at the Superbowl
— Milo Yiannopoulos (@Nero) January 29, 2015"
Regardless of how she handles the national anthem Sunday, the pressure on her shoulders will be immense. She will be performing in front of millions of people watching at home, and a slip-up would live in infamy.
Add in the fact that there are a plethora of prop bets, including how long Menzel will sing and whether or not she will forget a word, and there will be plenty of hardcore football fans watching her performance closely.
The national anthem is one of the symbols of the United States' history and freedom, and most people want Menzel to succeed and do the song the honor it deserves.
Let’s hope this rendition is one we remember forever in a good way.
