Pizza Hut Super Bowl Commercial 2015: Watch "Crust Flavor Challenge" Ad

Tim DanielsFeb 1, 2015

New Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan stars in Pizza Hut's 2015 Super Bowl commercial about the company's new crust flavors. The ad also features a brief cameo from Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

The premise surrounds people throwing aside their bland pizza crust rather than eating it. "That's a terrible call," Ryan howls in disapproval before Pizza Hut offers viewers a "Crust Flavor Challenge" to try any of their new crusts for free.

David Schwab of Octagon First Call notes Ryan, who went 46-50 in the regular season over six years with the New York Jets, shows personality is sometimes more important than accomplishments in the marketing world:

Romo pops up near the end of the commercial and says "not again" as the challenge flag flies into his box full of crusts. He's seemingly referencing the challenge and overturned catch call against Dez Bryant during the Cowboys' playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Ultimately, it's an ad that probably won't land atop many reviews on Monday. While it's a pretty funny spot, it's not over the top and spends a good chunk of the time selling the product. That's something a lot of Super Bowl ads fail to accomplish.

Involving Ryan and Romo definitely helps its cause. Doing so points directly toward the target audience with two easily recognizable football figures. But given the high level of competition during the Super Bowl, it will probably fall in the middle of the pack overall.
