Super Bowl Prop Bets 2015: Odds for Big Game's Most Interesting Gambles

Timothy RappJan 28, 2015

Some of the prop bets for this year's Super Bowl are just wacky and amazing.

Over at Bovada, where all of the prop bets on this article come from, you can do cross-sports bets (e.g., will Sidney Crosby have more points on Feb. 1 than Russell Wilson has touchdown passes), bet on whether a player will perform better than previous Super Bowl performances or even bet on if the Dow Jones market will be up or down the day after the Super Bowl.

Seriously.

Prop bets are weird, yes, but they are also really fun. So let's break down some of the more interesting prop bets below.

Prop: How many times will "deflated balls" be referred to during the game?

Over/Under: Three mentions

Analysis: I would say take the over here. The deflated balls will absolutely be mentioned the first time the Patriots have the ball, but the broadcast will also likely do an in-depth look at the scandal at some point during the game as well. That means what you are hoping for is that one of the announcers makes a joke or two about Deflategate at some point to get you over three mentions. I'd be shocked if that doesn't happen.

Prop: How long will it take Idina Menzel to sing the U.S. national anthem?

Over/Under: Two minutes and one second

Analysis: This one is tough. Based on Idina Menzel's background as a Broadway performer, I'd guess her performance will be expressive but tasteful. I don't think she'll go for a self-indulging, overelaborate performance. She didn't offer a ton of insight when she was interviewed by Ed Masley of AZCentral.com about the upcoming performance:

"

I'm not afraid to listen to other people and learn from them because no matter how it turns out it's going to be original because it's me. You know, it's such a big gig, such a nerve-wracking gig. Everybody talks about it. But I enjoy singing it. I've been working on it with my voice teacher and it's really a beautiful song. It has so much meaning, and I'm looking forward to trying to connect to it, actually, and the pride I feel singing it.

"

I'm leaning toward the under here, but you might want to stay away from this one.

Prop: Who will score the first touchdown?

Analysis: Stay away from this one. Marshawn Lynch is considered the favorite at 11-2 odds, but this one is so random I'd just stay away.

Prop: How many total passing yards will Tom Brady have?

Over/Under: 260.5 yards

Analysis: Take the under. This is the league's best secondary he's facing, and the Patriots are at their best when they are taking the ground-and-pound approach. This seems likely to be a defensive struggle.

Prop: How many rushing yards will Marshawn Lynch have?

Over/Under: 92.5 yards

Analysis: Statistically speaking, you should take the under on this one. Lynch has reached 93 rushing yards in just six of his 18 games this season, for starters. And the Patriots were pretty good against the run this year, giving up the ninth-fewest rushing yards per game (104.3) in the regular season. Sure, Lynch could go nuts and have a huge rushing afternoon, but it's probably more likely he finishes with about 85 yards on the ground.

Prop: Will Marshawn Lynch grab his crotch after scoring a TD in the game?

Analysis: Take the "No" (-600) option here. For starters, there's no guarantee he'll even score a touchdown. For another, it's possible he could be facing a fine for his minimalistic answers during media day and the team press conferences this week. Remember, he's already been fined for doing this move once.

Prop: What color will Bill Belichick's hoodie be?

Bets: Grey (-120), Blue (even) or Red (+750)

Analysis: I have no freaking clue, you guys. I just thought this one was a hilarious way to end things. God bless the hoodie.
