NFL Draft 2015: Updated Selection Order and Top Prospects Post-Super Bowl

Timothy RappFeb 2, 2015

The champions have been crowned, the Super Bowl hangovers have subsided and NFL fans are now faced with the bleak reality that we won't have any professional football until next September.

Oh, the humanity.

But fear not, NFL fans, we still have the offseason and with it free agency, trades, the NFL Scouting Combine and, of course, the draft. So while we mourn the end of the season, let us also look forward to this year's draft order and top prospects.

Top Prospects

The two most interesting prospects in this draft are quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an interesting decision on their hands if they decide to select either player.

In Mariota, the Bucs would be getting a taller version of Russell Wilson. He's athletic, he comes from an uptempo spread system and he generally makes smart decisions without turning the ball over.

Seriously, this past season he threw for 4,454 yards, 42 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Add in 770 rushing yards and another 15 touchdowns on the ground, and you can see why so many scouts and pundits are enamored with Mariota.

The qualms, of course, come from the fact that he isn't a traditional pocket passer. How will he adjust to the NFL passing game? Can he make all of the throws? Will he rely too much on his legs to make plays?

Personally, I think he'll use his legs to extend the play and buy time for his teammates to get open down the field. But I also believe any team that drafts Mariota must be willing to build a system around him that complements his strengths and playing style. The Bucs will have to decide if they are willing to do so or not.

Winston, on the other hand, looks the part of a traditional NFL passer. He regressed somewhat in 2014, though, throwing 15 fewer touchdowns and eight more interceptions as his passing yards and completion percentage each took a slight dip.

But a focused Winston is something to behold. Remember, he won the Heisman Trophy in 2013. He's a big, strong pocket passer with enough athleticism to extend plays and an arm capable of making all of the throws. He also has a penchant for saving his best for last, coming up big in the clutch repeatedly for Florida State this past season.

But NFL teams continue to worry about his off-field concerns. Winston is a lightning rod for controversy, and he doesn't always seem savvy when it comes to presenting himself in the best possible light, a concern since any team drafting him will consider him the face of their franchise.

Where Mariota has the image of a quiet, hardworking, developing leader, Winston's image certainly isn't one of a boy scout. That could cause him to slide somewhat in this draft.

Outside of the quarterbacks, the top of the draft board will likely be dominated by defensive players. While wide receiver Amari Cooper and offensive lineman Brandon Scherff should be taken in the top 10 picks, this year's draft will be dominated by players in the front seven on defense.

Defensive tackle Leonard Williams and edge-rusher Randy Gregory, for example, are potential top-three picks. Fellow pass-rushers like Vic Beasley, Shane Ray and Dante Fowler could all go early as well.

Shaq Thompson is one of the most intriguing prospects in years, as he excelled at both linebacker and running back at Washington and could potentially play both in the NFL. Meanwhile, Danny Shelton should continue to climb up draft boards, and Landon Collins is an excellent safety prospect.

The story heading into the draft will be where the top two quarterbacks go. But in truth, the top of the draft will be dominated by a slew of talented defensive players.
