Wolfsburg Cast Doubts Over Schurrle Deal

Sunday, Feb. 1

Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs insisted no deal has been struck with Chelsea, less than 48 before the transfer deadline. Football writer Kristof Terreur tweeted the latest from Bild:

Allofs' claim will casts doubts over Chelsea's ability to buy Juan Cuadrado, which was believed to be awaiting the catalyst of Schurrle's move to Wolfsburg. According to Bild (h/t ITV) on Feb. 30, Schurrle has already had a medical, but now it appears time is running out.

Schurrle Decides to Move on from Chelsea

Tuesday, Jan. 27

Sky Sports claim the former Bayer Leverkusen player has decided his future lies in Germany after failing to regularly play for the Blues' starting XI

Jose Mourinho had recently admitted that individuals could leave for "a phenomenal offer and (if) a player (is) super keen of accepting the challenge," per Sky Sports. And it now seems this stipulation have been met by Schurrle and Die Wolfe, with the club prepared to spend in excess of £22.5 million on the international player.

The German team are Bayern Munich's main rivals for the championship this season but are currently 11 points behind the Bavarian giants, so Schurrle's capture would aid them to close the gap.

Schurrle's exit will allow Chelsea to become active in the market, with both Raheem Sterling and Juan Cuadrado targeted by the Blues, per Charles Perrin of the Express.

But on Tuesday there was a twist in the plot as Wolfsburg moved to publicly distance themselves with the transfer of Schurrle.

David Wright of the Express quotes the Wolves sporting executive Klaus Allofs "rubbishing" any deal for the player:

"A very clear no [regarding Schurrle's transfer to Wolfsburg] There's nothing to the speculation. Even if we were interested, we'd certainly not be alone."

And it indeed seems there are other clubs calling, with Borussia Dortmund said to be very keen on the attacker's services.

European football writer, Samuel Jay C, commented BVB are now the clear favourites to grab the player, as reported by heavyweight German publication, Bild:

The news of Schurrle's availability and desire to leave Stamford Bridge will surely trigger a tsunami of interest in the coming days, just before the transfer window slams shut.

Despite his overall lack of playing time, Schurrle is always a credible goal threat and he has not let Mourinho down when he has featured.

This year, the player has four goals from his eight Premier League starts, WhoScored.com, and he would be a primary talent in other team.

His acquired pedigree in English football has attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, with coach Mauricio Pochettino refusing to rule out a raid on their London rivals—when questioned about the German, as quoted by James Dickenson of the Express:

"

There are a lot of rumours at this time of year, but we must focus on this game, and after analyse each situation differently. We have a lot of games ahead to be focused on. I don't believe that there will be a lot of movement.

"

Schurrle is sure to be a success where ever he travels to next. He is a tremendous player who has an eye for goal and a deadly finish from deep.

He has been unlucky at Chelsea but the players at his club are simply better that he is. Eden Hazard and Oscar are both deserved favourites of Mourinho, and the World Cup winner was always going to struggle to be anything more than a substitute.

A switch of Cuadrado and Schurrle would be clever business by the Special One, giving Chelsea more genuine width and varying the attacking options.

Schurrle does not have the skill sets of a winger, and Cuadrado's introduction would make him a more holistic member of Mourinho's team.
