Nick AkermanJan 27, 2015

Andy Murray proved too strong for Nick Kyrgios at the 2015 Australian Open, beating the local favourite 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 to march into the semi-final of this year's first Grand Slam.

Murray asserted his dominance early against a gusty Kyrgios, who should be applauded for playing fearless tennis against one of the world's best. The result was confirmed via the tournament's official Twitter account:

Kyrgios raced into a 0-30 lead on Murray's serve in the opening game, but the British No. 1 quickly found his rhythm to halt the break. Both players dominated on their serve in the early exchanges, although Murray appeared to enjoy more control with a variation of shots from the baseline. He broke to make it 5-3, serving out the first set without major hassle.

Murray won 74 percent of his first service points and 100 percent of his second during the first set, per the Australian Open's website. Kyrgios managed 58 percent and 60 percent respectively, underlining his inability to consistently pressure Murray with consecutive successes.

Pressure immediately descended over Kyrgios' game in the second set. He saved a break point to lead 2-1, and he then eventually executed an audacious winner to lead 6-5. The Australian matched Murray blow-for-blow until the tiebreak arrived.

Kyrgios showed his full range of emotions at this point. He executed a brilliant drop-shot to lead 3-2 in the tiebreak before Murray levelled. The Australian's next point was met with a huge roar, amplifying the applause of the crowd with his infectious passion.

Murray successfully played a terrific lob from the baseline, utilising top spin to keep his attempt on court, a shot which was met with a knowing smile from his opposite number. Kyrgios then threw his racket to the ground when he mishit a simple volley, handing Murray his second set point, which he duly converted with another excellent lob from deep.

The tournament's feed highlighted what was a key moment:

There's no doubt Kyrgios began to tire at this point. Murray broke at 4-2 in the third, but his 19-year-old opponent hit back to secure his first break of the match. Murray was in often unplayable form, though, and he delivered a pinpoint forehand to serve for the match.

The Scottish star stroked home another forehand to finally put Kyrgios to bed, rounding off a memorable performance for both players, who put on an intriguing show. Although Kyrgios highlighted his talent and potential for the future, this was business as usual for the winner.

Murray notched 48 winners to Kyrgios' 36, posting 28 unforced errors to his opponent's 38, per the tournament's stats tracker. The semi-finalist spoke to the Australian crowd after victory was confirmed:

Tomas Berdych now stands between Murray and the final. The powerful Czech obliterated Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-0, 7-6(5) earlier in the day to book his place in the last four. Berdych is a big-hitter, someone who will test Murray's footwork, but there's an argument that the Brit should be considered the hot favourite to clinch the tournament.

Kyrgios should be proud of his performances across the last week and will deservedly take a galvanised following away from Melbourne.
