Last Night On “The Knee Jerks”: A Detroit Tigers Extravaganza!
The topic, as expected with a guy whoโs got a Web site named that, was the Tigers.
We spent a full hour and some change with Joe, covering everything from the Tigersโ chances to win the division (plus how they stack up against the Yankees and Red Sox); the possibility of adding another bat before Aug. 31; the confounding Magglio Ordonez; the possibility of adding John Smoltz; whether we trust Armando Galarraga; Jim Leyland on steroids; the toughness of Brandon Inge; and much, much more!
I went on a rant about the fear of dealing prospects, and even though I apologized on the air, it felt oh, so good!
After that, Joe, Al and I talked some Lions and Pistons for the remaining 25 minutes.
The highlights:
Big Al
On Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford: โThis kid has got a gun. No, heโs got a cannon. Heโs got a high-powered weapon.โ (this is a week after Al said he wasnโt going to allow himself to get excited!)
On new coach Jim Schwartz: โI hate to say it, but one of the reasons why Iโm so excited about the season starting is that Jim Schwartz has been impressing the hell out of me.โ
On the Pistons signing Ben Wallace: โHeโs going to play for about $1.3 million, which in the NBA is nothing. I wonder if Rodney Stuckey will let him have No. 3 back.โ
Eno
On Stafford: โIt looks like a perfect storm for him to play. New regime, new teammates, all this praise. It looks like itโs all coming together for him.โ
On Schwartz: โI donโt get the feeling that heโs going to let the inmates run the asylum, as has been the case in the past. The Lions finally seem to have a strong personality as head coach.โ
On Wallace: โIf he can block a few shots, grab some rebounds, change the momentum a little bitโฆ inject some energy, then heโs worth the money.โ
