Australian Open 2015: Day 9 Results, Highlights and Scores Recap from Melbourne
Tomas Berdych produced the highlight of Day 9 at the 2015 Australian Open, emphatically snapping a lengthy losing run against Rafael Nadal as the men's No. 3 seed fell in straight sets.
Berdych simply overpowered the Spaniard to book a semi-final showdown with Andy Murray, who saw off Nick Kyrgios in Tuesday's late encounter.
Meanwhile, the third seed was also dumped out of the women's event. Simona Halep was stunned by Russian Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets.
Makarova's fellow Russian, Maria Sharapova, did restore some order for the top seeds. She made comfortable work of beating Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in what had been a highly anticipated encounter.

Murray Blasts His Way Past Kyrgios
Murray was obviously in no mood to wait around to beat local favourite Kyrgios. That became clear once he blasted his way through the first set in quick fashion, per BBC Tennis:
Former Australian tennis great Pat Cash bemoaned Kyrgios' lack of mobility around the court as well as his inexperience against top players during commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra (h/t BBC Tennis):
There was a certain irony to Cash's comments. After all, he recently criticised his country's tennis establishment for deriding Kyrgios' inexperience in a column for The Sunday Times.
Watching Murray make short work of the opening set was apparently all Cash needed to see to change his mind. However, Cash will have been impressed by the youngster's resilience in the second set.
He battled back to push Murray all the way, per BBC Tennis:
Kyrgios refused to yield during a tense set that eventually gave way to a tiebreak. He even surprised his more illustrious opponent with a quite superb shot.
The tournament's official Twitter account described the moment:
During that marathon second set, Murray established one of his keys for victory. His powerful serves were often too much for his unseasoned opponent to handle.
ESPN Tennis detailed how much success Murray found with his serve:
"Murray has won 18 straight points on serve. Tiebreak time on Rod Laver Arena! #UpAllNight #AusOpen
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 27, 2015"
In all, Murray hit 13 aces, per the IBM SlamTracker. But for all of the powerful serves, it was a pair of lob shots that eventually saved Murray in the second set.
Writer Tom Perrotta was left suitably impressed with the Scotsman's skill:
Murray had things easier in the final set. He eventually claimed it 6-3 to see off Kyrgios and ensure a meeting with Berdych.
Berdych Powers Past Nadal
A sluggish-looking Nadal couldn't handle the power of Berdych. The Czech Republic player blasted the Spaniard with his serve and volley game, rushing Nadal into mistakes.
Berdych boomed 10 aces, per the IBM SlamTracker. He also hit a number of thunderous baseline strokes to help break serve. In total, Berdych converted five of 10 break points to leave Nadal frustrated.
Nadal, who often appeared to struggle moving around the court, never really got his game going. In particular, his forehand was routinely wayward, as the Sports Illustrated Tennis Twitter feed noted:
After being thoroughly outplayed during the first two sets, Nadal did battle valiantly to try to keep his slim hopes alive in the third. But in the end, Berdych rallied to win a tense tiebreak.
Michael Beattie of the tournament's official site described the winning point:
"With that, Berdych rallied and refocused. Nadal saved match points at 5-6 and fought back from 5-1 down in the ensuing tiebreak but the Czech made no mistake with the first match point on his serve, firing a service winner down the T for victory and his second consecutive Australian Open semifinal.
"
That meant Berdych finally put an end to his longstanding problems against Nadal. ESPN Tennis had the details:
"Tomas Berdych snaps 17 match losing streak against Nadal and advances to the #AusOpen semifinals for 2nd straight yr. pic.twitter.com/SFxQQhesE3
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 27, 2015"
As for Nadal, he was quick to reference the back problems that clearly hampered his mobility, per the tournament's official Twitter feed:
But Berdych won't care about that. On this form, the Czech could spring a few more surprises at this tournament.
Murray had better be wary.
Makarova Springs the Upset
It wasn't necessarily Makarova beating Halep that was so shocking. Rather, it was the emphatic manner of the win.
The 10th-rated player at the tournament made staggeringly fast work of sending Halep packing. ESPN Tennis detailed just how quick Makarova was:
"She's done it! @katemakarova1 defeats No.3 seed Halep in 69 minutes. The Russian is thru to #AusOpen SF for 1st time. pic.twitter.com/guxWSP2Hp0
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 27, 2015"
Makarova's success was built on her ability to break serve. She won five of six break points. The Russian also attacked at the net, winning four of eight points when she came off the baseline, according to the IBM SlamTracker.
Those points catapulted Makarova into the last four in straight sets. She noted how it's an unusual position for her, per the tournament's official Twitter account:
A familiar foe awaits Makarova at the semi-final stage.
Sharapova Dominates Bouchard
Like Makarova, Sharapova built pressure on her opponent's serve to set up her domination of Bouchard. ESPN Tennis described how Sharapova stayed strong with her return game early on:
"Two breaks give Sharapova 1st set over Bouchard 6-3. Can the World No.2 close out young Canadian in straight sets? pic.twitter.com/RMAwOFwmB3
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 27, 2015"
After winning the opening set, it was relatively serene for Sharapova. She soon claimed the match with an even more impressive second-set performance.
While Bouchard couldn't make headway with her serve, Sharapova smashed a pair of aces. She also won 84 percent of points on her first serve, per the IBM SlamTracker.
Afterwards, the World No. 2 described how she wanted to break Bouchard's confidence, per the tournament's Twitter feed:
Sharapova will now meet Makarova in an all-Russian semi-final. But both will first wait anxiously to see how the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, perform in the other quarter-final matches.
As for Berdych and Murray, they'll turn their attention to the quarter-final clashes pitting Stanislas Wawrinka against Kei Nishikori as well as Novak Djokovic taking on Milos Raonic.
